How is RRTS important for Urban and Regional Development of India?

Delhi & NCR (National Capital Region) is emerging as a magnet of attraction for people at a revolutionary pace. Despite the extensive network of Indian railways and road transport, the inadequacy of public transport has its undeniable aftermaths such as rising accidental statistics, pollution concentration, commuting time delay, and energy wastage.

With the rapid urbanization, large industrial & residential units with a number of hospitality & educational institutions are raising the need for investments for the regional development including recycling of old & decrepit areas with the revitalization of existing urban areas.

Rapid urbanization has the potential for the development of society and everlasting innovations that come with huge essential infrastructure investments. The aftermaths of rapid urbanization in form of commuting delays due to traffic congestion, severe pollutant concentration in Delhi-NCR, accidents on the road and fuel & energy wastage are the major scientific problems on the verge of environmental quality concerns & ecological instability in the region.

To overcome such alarming issues, an emerging interoperable transportation system comprised of integrated multi-modal transport infrastructure is required, in which rail transit may prove to be the most viable, scalable, greener, and energy-efficient option. It enforces the need for a multi-modal transit system to meet the high growth in transport demand in the large metropolitan area connecting the outskirts to the center of the city.

The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) can be an alternative to existing public transport to reduce the dependency of commuters on personalized vehicles, provide seamless connectivity in regional transportation and highlight the issues & perspectives of urbanization, traffic congestion, road safety, pollution and parking. Apart from this, RRTS will also connect urban, rural, industrial (Special Economic Zones), regional and sub-regional zones.

RRTS is a new, dedicated, high speed, high capacity, comfortable commuter service connecting regional nodes in NCR. It is different from conventional Railway as it will provide reliable, high frequency, point to point regional travel at high speed along dedicated path way. It is also different from metro rail system as it caters to passengers looking to travel a relatively longer distance with fewer stops and at higher speed.

The development of RRTS corridors with transit-oriented development (TOD) may attract millions of passengers and transform the economic growth but high capital expenditure, environmental obstacles, cost implications and political opposition in developing countries are the major factors for project dropping.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is a joint venture company of Govt of India and States of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and U.P, under the administrative control of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The corporation is mandated for implementing the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project across the NCR of India, ensuring a balanced and sustainable urban development through better connectivity and access.

To explain the need, importance & role of Regional Rapid Transit Systems (RRTS) in Urban and Regional Development of India, Shri Vinay Kumar Singh, Managing Director, National Capital Region Transport Corporation Ltd (NCRTC) will deliver his speech at the 2nd Urban Infra Business Summit & Awards 2022 to be held on 7th November 2022 at India International Centre, New Delhi.
