Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Larsen & Toubro in October-end emerged as the lowest bidder for constructing yet another package of Chennai Metro’s Phase 2 project after Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) opened financial bids for Package UG-06.
This roughly 5.8 km underground civil package consists of twin tunnels and 5 underground stations between Kolathur and Nathamuni of the mostly elevated 47 km Line-5, also known as Red Line will connect Madhavaram and Sholinganallur through 48 stations.
L&T was the only bidder for Package UG06 when technical bids were opened in August, so it was fairly obvious they’d be the lowest bidder when CMRL moved on to technical bid evaluation and onward to the financial bid opening stage.
CMRL invited tenders for UG06 in January 2021 with a 1395 day (3.8 years) completion deadline. They require a minimum of 4 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to be deployed for tunneling here, and out of those 2 must be sourced from Japanese manufacturers, per the conditions laid out by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Tender: CMRL/CON/PHASE-II/CORR-5/CP06/UG06/2021.
The scope of the tender is construction of underground stations at Kolathur, Srinivasa Nagar, Villivakam Sub-urban Station, Villivakam bus-terminus and Nathamuni with entry / exit, ventilation shafts, plumbing, earthmat, architectural finishes including signages etc. including twin bored tunnels from Kolathur retrieval shaft to Nathamuni launching shaft and ramps with U – section in corridor-5 of CMRL phase-II project. L&T has quoted Rs 2,23.93 crore for this contract package and the package will be funded by Japan International Cooperation Agenecy (JACA).
22 trains of 3 cars each and 4 trains of 6 cars each exclusively for Line 5 plus 25 trains of 3 cars each and 18 trains of 6 cars each common for Lines 3 and 5 circular train operation will be there.
