Afcons Infrastructure awarded ₹1,007 crore civil contract for Bhopal Metro Phase 1 Project

Bhopal, India (Metro Rail Today): AFCONS Infrastructure Limited has been awarded a ₹1,006.74 crore civil contract for the construction of a 12.9 km stretch under the Bhopal Metro Phase 1 project. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) issued the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) for the contract on December 14, 2024.

This civil contract (Package BH-05) encompasses part design and the construction of an elevated viaduct, thirteen elevated metro stations, and access to the depot. The section will link Bhadbhada Chauraha to Ratnagiri Tiraha, excluding the elevated passenger interchange metro station, covering chainages between 50+000 and 62+915. Additionally, the access to the depot will span chainages 00+143 to 01+080. This stretch is part of the Blue Line of the Bhopal Metro Phase 1 project.

The ₹1,006.74 crore contract is expected to be completed in 36 months under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) mode. The 12.915 km Blue Line will be a key segment of the Bhopal Metro network, improving connectivity across the city.

Notably, the Blue Line was initially designated as the Red Line. The Bogda Pul Station, set to serve as an interchange with the Orange Line, is being constructed by URC Construction as part of Package BH-03.

The Bhopal Metro project is being funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through a €400 million loan. MPMRCL began the bidding process for the Blue Line construction in June 2023, with an estimated contract value of ₹1,121.63 crore. The construction timeline for the project is three years.

In October 2023, the technical bids were opened, with seven bidders participating. The financial bids were opened in October 2024 where AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd. emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) with a bid of ₹1,006.74 crore, which is significantly lower than the estimated budget. The other qualified bidders included Kalpataru Projects – Gulermak JV (₹1,028.49 crore), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (₹1,069.20 crore), and Tata Projects Ltd. (₹1,337.38 crore).

The successful awarding of this contract marks a major step forward in the development of Bhopal's metro network, promising to enhance urban mobility and transportation infrastructure in the city.
