Ceigall India launches First U-Girder for Kanpur Metro Corridor 2

Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major milestone for the Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project, Ceigall India has successfully erected the first of 184 U-girders for Package KNPCC-12 of Line-2, which will connect Agriculture University to Barra-8. This feat was achieved on Monday night, marking a significant step forward in the construction of the 8.38 km elevated section of the metro line.

The installation took place in the ramp area near Agriculture College Metro Station and Agriculture College Depot, which are currently under construction as part of Package KNPCC-14. The work was carried out by Ceigall India, who were awarded the Rs. 427.11 crore contract by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in March 2024. The package includes the construction of two disjointed elevated sections of Line-2, one at the southern end and another at the northern end.

The U-girder, a key structural component used to support the elevated metro tracks, was successfully erected within 8 months of contract award, highlighting Ceigall India’s efficient progress on the project. The total timeline for completing Package KNPCC-12 is 30 months, making this a noteworthy achievement in the ongoing metro development.

Details of Kanpur Metro Line-2 Construction

The southern section of Package KNPCC-12 spans 3.745 km and will connect Double Pullia Ramp to Barra-8. This section will include four elevated stations at:

  • Vijay Nagar Chauraha
  • Shastri Chowk
  • Barra-7 Station
  • Barra-8 Station

Meanwhile, the northern section of the line, which extends for 557.8 meters, will connect the Rawatpur Interchange Station to Agriculture University Station, with a single elevated station located next to the Agriculture University Depot. This will complete the essential connectivity on both ends of the metro line.

The U-girders required for this project were cast at Ceigall India’s yard in Naubasta, located in the Hanspuram neighborhood of Kanpur. The company began casting the 27.90-meter-long U-girders in July 2024, and the installation process marks the beginning of the structural work on the elevated sections of Line-2.

Project Timeline and Progress

Ceigall’s progress on KNPCC-12 has been notably swift, especially considering the ambitious timeline of 30 months for the completion of the contract. In comparison, the previous project on Line-1, executed by JMC Projects (now Kalpataru Projects International) for Package KNPCC-07, took 7 months to complete a similar U-girder erection process.

While the KNPCC-12 package is slightly slower than the earlier Line-1 civil works, Ceigall’s current timeline for Line-2 is still impressive, demonstrating efficient project execution and high-level coordination between the contractor and UPMRC.

Kanpur Metro Line-2: A Key Development for the City

Kanpur Metro Line-2 is part of Phase 1 of the city’s metro expansion, which aims to improve public transportation and reduce traffic congestion in Kanpur. The project will serve key urban areas and provide seamless connectivity, particularly between the Agriculture University and Barra-8, two important hubs in the city.

Once complete, Line-2 will significantly enhance mobility for residents and contribute to the overall development of Kanpur’s metro network, easing congestion and offering a reliable, eco-friendly mode of transport for daily commuters.

Looking Ahead

With the successful installation of the first U-girder, Ceigall India is expected to continue its work on the 184 U-girders required for the completion of the elevated sections. The next major milestone will be the continued installation of the U-girders along with other critical works such as the construction of metro stations and integration of electrical and communication systems.

As Kanpur Metro Phase 1 progresses, UPMRC is committed to delivering the project within the set timelines, making it a significant step forward in enhancing urban mobility in the city.
