TBM Tatya commissioned for tunneling of Kanpur Metro's Underground Section

Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): The 'Tatya' Tunnel Boring Machine was launched today for tunnel construction from the launching shaft built at Chunniganj underground station of the Under-construction Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section under the first corridor of Kanpur Metro Rail Project (IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta).

This TBM will be retrieved from Bada Chauraha underground metro station, constructing a 'downline' tunnel from Chunniganj to Bada Chauraha via Naveen Market. A retrieval shaft will be prepared at Bada Chauraha to retrieve the machine. Tatya TBM has to construct a 1264-meter long tunnel from Chunniganj to Bada Chauraha. Earlier in the first week of March, 'Nana' TBM was launched for the construction of tunnel on the 'Upline' from Chuniganj Metro station launching shaft. This machine has so far completed the construction of 58.8-meter tunnel.

The 'Nana' and 'Tatya' Tunnel Boring Machines in the nearly 4 km long Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section have already completed the construction work of the 1005 meter tunnel between Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj. After this, they have now been launched for the construction of tunnels from the launching shaft located in Chunniganj to Bada Chauraha Metro Station via Naveen Market. Another special thing about this construction work is that in order to save time, both these TBMs will not be retrieved after arriving at Naveen Market underground station to re-launch again from the launching shaft for tunnelling till Bada Chauraha, instead they will be transported from one end to the other inside the 215-meter long Naveen Market station using a ‘Dragging’ method. For this, the construction of platform level will be completed before TBM reaches Naveen Market Underground Metro Station. After dragging of the TBMs to the other end of Naveen Market Underground Metro station, the machine will continue tunnelling work to reach Bada Chauraha Metro station.

At present, under the first corridor of Kanpur Metro Rail Project, apart from Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section, construction work on Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section and Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section is also progressing at a fast pace.
