Hyderabad, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant boost to urban infrastructure, the Telangana Government has allocated an estimated ₹1,100 crore for the next phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail in the recently announced budget. This strategic investment aims to expand the metro network and enhance connectivity across the city.
A noteworthy portion of this budget, ₹100 crore, will be dedicated to extending the metro to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad. This extension is expected to facilitate smoother and faster transit for both domestic and international travelers, further cementing Hyderabad’s status as a major hub for business and tourism.
A substantial ₹500 crore has been earmarked for extending the metro line into the historic Old City. This expansion will cover the stretch from Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Falaknuma, continuing to Chandrayanagutta. The integration of the Old City into the metro network is a crucial development, aimed at improving connectivity for residents and boosting local commerce.
The first phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail covered nearly 70 kilometers across three corridors. The government has re-evaluated and modified the second phase proposals to include the development of 78.4 kilometers of five extended corridors, with an estimated outlay of ₹24,042 crore. This extension will connect the Old City to Shamshabad Airport and further extend the present corridors from Nagole to LB Nagar.
Key Extensions in Phase Two
Nagole to LB Nagar: The existing corridor will be extended, enhancing connectivity for commuters in these densely populated areas.
MGBS to Falaknuma and Chandrayanagutta: This critical extension into the Old City aims to improve access and reduce travel times for residents.
The Deputy Chief Minister announced plans for the development of key interchange stations at Nagole, LB Nagar, and Chandrayanagutta. These stations will play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless transitions between different metro lines and other modes of transport, thus streamlining the overall transit experience for commuters. In addition to the metro expansion, the budget also allocated INR 50 crore for the second phase of the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS). The state government, in collaboration with South Central Railway (SCR), will share the total project cost of about INR 1,150 crore. SCR, having already spent approximately INR 580 crore, recently opened new suburban lines towards Umdanagar near Shamshabad and Medchal. This expansion of the MMTS is expected to complement the metro network and further enhance the city's connectivity and infrastructure.
The expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail is set to transform the city's connectivity and infrastructure. With the government’s robust investment, the metro network will be able to accommodate the growing demands of the urban population, provide efficient and sustainable transit options, and promote economic growth.
The extension of the metro to key areas like the international airport and the Old City is expected to have a significant economic impact. Improved connectivity will likely attract more businesses, boost tourism, and provide residents with better access to employment opportunities and services. Moreover, the development of interchange stations will facilitate easier and quicker transfers, making the metro a more attractive option for daily commuters.
The expansion aligns with the government's vision of creating a sustainable urban mobility system. By providing a reliable and efficient alternative to road transport, the metro will help reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the city. The emphasis on extending the network to underserved areas highlights the government’s commitment to inclusive urban development.
The public response to the metro expansion plans has been overwhelmingly positive. Commuters and residents have welcomed the government's decision to invest in enhancing the metro network, recognizing the numerous benefits it will bring to their daily lives.
The allocation of ₹1,100 crore for the expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail marks a significant step towards improving the city's transportation infrastructure. With major extensions planned to the international airport, the Old City, and other key areas, the metro network is set to become a cornerstone of Hyderabad's urban mobility.
