First Cross Arm Erected in Kanpur Metro's Baradevi-Naubasta Elevated Section

Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): Under the ambitious Corridor-1 (IIT-Naubasta) of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, a significant step forward has been taken with the initiation of the erection of the first Cross Arm along the 5.5 km long Baradevi-Naubasta Elevated section. This marks a crucial milestone on the 10th of November, 2023.

The first Cross Arm, erected at the under-construction Naubasta Metro Station, will play a pivotal role in extending the length of metro stations. Currently set at 80 meters, this expansion strategy is envisioned to accommodate the rising number of passengers. Plans include extending the station length up to 140 meters.

In the Baradevi-Naubasta section, a total of four Cross Arms are slated for placement at each metro station. Baradevi, in particular, will feature two Cross Arms on both sides. The Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section of Baradevi station is set to have one Cross Arm, with the remaining three on the opposite side. This strategic distribution totals to 20 Cross Arms within this section.

Highlighting its versatility, the 'Cross Arm' is designed to act as a substitute for pier caps. Prefabricated in the casting yard alongside pier caps and girders, these Cross Arms are then lifted into place with the aid of cranes on the elevated structure of the metro.

Metro engineers have made provisions to extend the length of stations by approximately 60 meters, allowing for an extension from 80 meters to 140 meters. This foresight ensures the potential operation of six-coach metro trains, a significant upgrade from the existing four-coach capacity.

The construction journey of the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section, initiated on August 8, 2022, has seen noteworthy milestones. These include the laying of the first pier cap on December 27, 2022, and the erection of the first U-girder on January 21, 2023. The recent commencement of Pi-girder installation at the Baradevi and Kidwai Nagar stations signifies ongoing progress.

Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC), commended the Kanpur metro engineers on their commendable progress in civil construction. Following the successful initiation of metro services from IIT to Motijheel, the focus is now on meeting deadlines for the remaining section of the first corridor (Chunniganj-Naubasta).

Currently, construction activities are progressing rapidly not only on the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section but also on the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section and the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section. This reaffirms the commitment to the timely completion of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project.
