Six Firms Bid for first Civil Work Contract of Thane Metro Rail Project

Thane, India (Metro Rail Today): The ambitious Thane Metro project has reached a key milestone, with six prominent civil engineering firms submitting bids for the metro’s first civil construction contract under Package C-01, as technical bids were opened this week by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MahaMetro).

Formally known as the Thane Integral Ring Metro Project, the 29-km network with 22 stations (20 elevated, 2 underground) was approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024, with a completion deadline set for 2029. The project is estimated to cost ₹12,200 crore and is envisioned as a transformative urban mobility solution for one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing cities.

Civil Package C-01: Bidding Details

The scope under Package C-01 includes:

  • Construction of 20.527 km of elevated viaduct,

  • Depot-line connection to Kasarvadavali Depot,

  • Three special spans crossing over Mumbai Metro’s Line-4 (Green Line) and Line-5 (Orange Line).

The station construction will be handled under separate tenders, yet to be issued.

MahaMetro had invited bids for this package in May 2025, with a contract estimate of ₹1,424 crore and an ambitious 30-month deadline.

Bidders for Thane Metro’s C-01 Package

  1. Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

  2. G R Infraprojects Ltd. (GRIL)

  3. J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd. (JKIL)

  4. Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL)

  5. Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T)

  6. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL)

The bids will now undergo technical evaluation, a process expected to take a few months. Once qualified, financial bids will be opened to identify the lowest bidder and determine the likely construction partner for this critical metro section.

Thane Metro is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across the city and integrate with multiple other transport systems, including:

  • Mumbai Metro Line-4 (Wadala–Kasarvadavali)

  • Mumbai Metro Line-5 (Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan)

  • Thane suburban rail network

Its ring-like design enables 360-degree coverage across key business, residential, and transit hubs, helping decongest arterial routes and promote transit-oriented development (TOD).

The upcoming stations will cover areas such as Manpada, Waghbil, Balkum, Majiwada, Kasarvadavali, and Thane Railway Station, among others.

The Road Ahead

Once Package C-01 is awarded, MahaMetro is expected to float additional civil tenders, including those for station buildings, underground sections, and depot construction. The project timeline remains tight, with the 30-month execution period seen as challenging but achievable, depending on contractor performance and land acquisition progress.

As Thane emerges as a pivotal urban node in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the Thane Integral Ring Metro Project stands out as a bold, forward-looking investment in green, integrated, and high-capacity public transport. The outcome of this first civil contract will set the pace for one of Maharashtra’s most closely watched urban infrastructure projects.
