Patna, India (Metro Rail Today): Voestalpine VAE VKN India emerged as the lowest bidder in the highly anticipated contract (Package PT-4R) for supplying UIC-60 turnouts and scissor crossovers for the Patna Metro Phase 1 project. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) declared Voestalpine VAE VKN India as the winning bidder, marking a significant advancement in the development of the 30.91 km metro network.
Package PT-4R involves the design, manufacturing, and supply of UIC-60 turnouts and scissor crossovers, essential components that enable Patna Metro's trains (rolling stock) to transition seamlessly from one track line to another. While the exact locations for their installation remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that these crucial elements will find placement at terminals and interchange stations, including New ISBT, Khemni Chak, Patna Railway Station, and Danapur Cantonment.
This contract represents a retender of PT-4, which initially received bids in April 2021 from Voestalpine and Vossloh Cogifer. Known for their specialization in high-precision track work, these two firms are often the primary bidders for such critical projects. The retender was initiated in July 2023, with an estimated cost of Rs. 35.53 crore and a 3-year deadline. The technical bids were opened in September 2023, revealing the same two bidders from the previous round.
In the recent financial bid evaluation, Voestalpine VAE VKN India submitted a bid of Rs 37.58 crore, while Vossloh Cogifer proposed Rs 40.23 crore. Although Voestalpine's bid was marginally higher than DMRC's estimate by 5.76%, the contract is expected to be awarded in the coming weeks, signaling an efficient and prompt evaluation process.
Notably, all three track-related packages tendered for Patna Metro have undergone a retendering process. Package PT-7R, involving the manufacturing and supply of 1200 MT 90 UTS, UIC 60, 13 m, Class A 880 Grade Rails for New ISBT Patna Depot, was awarded to Steel Authority of India (SAIL). Similarly, PT-8R, covering standard gauge track work at New ISBT Depot, was successfully awarded to S.C. Agarwal.
The successful bid by Voestalpine VAE VKN India for Package PT-4R marks a pivotal step forward in the realization of Patna Metro's Phase 1 expansion. As the city eagerly anticipates enhanced connectivity and efficient transportation, this contract underscores the commitment to delivering a world-class metro network for the residents of Patna.
The procurement of turnouts and crossovers is a critical aspect of metro infrastructure, and with Voestalpine securing this contract, Patna Metro is on track to achieve a seamless and well-connected transit system.
