Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a forward-looking move to accommodate future passenger demands and enhance its operational capacity, the Chennai Metro Rail Project is set to acquire an additional 28 rakes of 6-car trains. Estimated at a cost of Rs. 2820.90 crore, this strategic procurement underscores the city's commitment to seamless and efficient urban transportation.
With the successful completion of Phase-I, encompassing extensions across two corridors and a total span of 54.1 Km, Chennai's metro system stands as a testament to modern urban connectivity. During Phase I operations, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) had acquired 52 rakes of 4-car trains, facilitating smooth daily commuting for the city's residents.
Commuter convenience takes center stage as CMRL extends its operational hours, now running trains for 19 hours a day, from 5 am to midnight. The schedule includes morning peak services from 8.00 am to 11.00 am and evening peak services from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm. To ensure seamless operations during weekday peak hours, a total of 45 rakes, including a reserve of 2 rakes for strategic purposes, are effectively deployed.
Anticipating the evolving passenger demand and prioritizing enhanced services, a meticulous assessment was conducted for the additional Rolling Stock requirement within Chennai Metro Rail Phase-I Network Operations. As a result, a resolute decision has been made to acquire an additional 28 rakes of 6-car trains, further fortifying the Phase-I operations.
With an estimated cost of Rs. 2820.90 crore, this strategic move will be supported through funding from Multilateral Funding Agencies. The proposal has received the seal of approval from the Government of Tamil Nadu, signaling a shared commitment to elevating urban transportation infrastructure.
The next step involves seeking external funding from Multilateral Funding Agencies, in collaboration with the Government of India. This collaborative approach underscores Chennai's determination to innovate and invest in a robust metro network that not only meets current needs but also anticipates and accommodates future demands.
As Chennai's urban landscape continues to evolve, the acquisition of these additional 6-car trains marks a pivotal advancement, reaffirming the city's dedication to efficient and accessible urban mobility.
