Knorr-Bremse partners with Alstom for supply of Metro Train Equipment in India

Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): In a strategic collaboration, Knorr-Bremse, a global leader in braking and climate control systems, is joining forces with Alstom to equip metro trains destined for major cities in India. The partnership involves providing braking and climate control systems for 52 Alstom Movia trains ordered by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) for Bhopal and Indore.

As a key player in India's transportation sector, Knorr-Bremse continues its commitment to the country's mass transit segment. The 52 Alstom Movia trains, totaling 156 railcars, will contribute to the burgeoning mass rapid-transit systems (MRTS) in Bhopal and Indore. Set to commence service in 2024, these trains will operate on both overground and underground lines, offering efficient connectivity to commuters at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

In addition to supplying cutting-edge braking and climate control systems, Knorr-Bremse will provide comprehensive services for these technologies over a 15-year period. This long-term commitment underscores the company's dedication to ensuring the safety, reliability, and eco-friendly mobility of India's mass transit systems.

Knorr-Bremse secured this collaboration with Alstom by showcasing its ability to deliver high-quality products on time. The company's dedicated technical support throughout all stages of the project, coupled with shared experience from India's recent major metro project, Agra-Kanpur, further solidified Knorr-Bremse as a preferred partner.

At the core of Knorr-Bremse's braking systems is the brake control unit, incorporating market-leading software expertise from the company's Technology Center in Pune, India (TCI). This emphasizes the localization of technology and expertise, aligning with India's push for self-sufficiency in critical sectors.

The climate control systems supplied by Knorr-Bremse's Merak brand are recognized for their energy efficiency and reliability. Already in use in several Indian metro systems, these systems prioritize passenger comfort with features such as energy-saving free cooling, CO₂ sensors, and intelligent fresh air control. The implementation of these systems in Bhopal and Indore will further enhance the in-train air flow experience.

Knorr-Bremse is set to commence deliveries to Alstom for the Bhopal and Indore projects, with expectations of continued deliveries until mid-2025. Simultaneously, the company will assume responsibility for the long-term servicing of the braking and climate control systems, ensuring the sustained high availability and reliability of the metro services.

This collaboration between Knorr-Bremse and Alstom not only signifies a significant step in advancing India's metro infrastructure but also highlights the global expertise contributing to the country's transportation evolution.
