Nagpur, India (Metro Rail Today): The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has revealed the list of bidders competing for the ₹154.30 crore Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System contract for the Nagpur Metro Rail Project – Phase 2.
According to the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation, three prominent technology firms have submitted bids for this high-value contract:
The project, estimated at ₹154.30 crore, includes a bid security (EMD) of ₹77 lakh and will be executed over a duration of 180 weeks.
The contract entails the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of a state-of-the-art open-loop EMV NCMC card and QR code-based Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System, along with comprehensive annual maintenance (CAMC) services for the entire Nagpur Metro Phase 2 network.
The AFC system will enable commuters to use National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) and QR codes for seamless and contactless travel across metro corridors, supporting multi-modal integration with buses and other transport services in line with India’s digital and smart mobility vision.
The Nagpur Metro Phase 2 project, currently under construction, covers a total route length of 43.8 km. It includes four extension corridors expanding the existing Orange Line and Aqua Line developed in Phase 1.
| Corridor | Route | Length (km) |
|---|---|---|
| Orange Line | Khapri – MIDC ESR | 18.5 |
| Orange Line | Automotive Square – Kanhan River | 13.0 |
| Aqua Line | Prajapati Nagar – Transport Nagar | 5.6 |
| Aqua Line | Lokmanya Nagar – Hingna | 6.7 |
When completed, Phase 2 will extend metro connectivity to the outer suburbs and industrial belts of Nagpur, significantly improving access for daily commuters, students, and industrial workers while reducing road congestion and pollution.
The AFC system will make Nagpur one of India’s most advanced digital transit networks, integrating open-loop payments and supporting interoperability between multiple modes of transport.
The introduction of EMV-based NCMC cards ensures that commuters can use a single card for all public transport and retail payments, promoting the Government of India’s Digital India and One Nation, One Card initiatives.
The QR-based ticketing option will further improve convenience for occasional riders, allowing them to generate digital tickets through Maha-Metro’s official app or at station kiosks.
The AFC upgrade under Phase 2 will not only streamline fare collection but also enable data-driven operational insights, improving passenger flow management and revenue tracking. With this system, Nagpur Metro continues to establish itself as a benchmark for medium-sized Indian cities implementing world-class urban transit systems.
Once the bids are evaluated and the lowest (L1) bidder is finalized, the contract award will pave the way for one of India’s most advanced metro ticketing ecosystems — marking another key milestone in Nagpur’s journey toward becoming a smart, connected, and sustainable urban hub.
