Surat, India (Metro Rail Today): The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited has taken a major leap toward modern urban mobility as the Surat Metro commenced its first trial run on March 29, 2026, marking a crucial milestone in the city’s evolving public transport infrastructure. The trial operation is being conducted on an 8.5-kilometre elevated stretch between Dream City and Althan Tenement along Corridor 1, also known as the Diamond Corridor.
The initial run covers seven fully constructed stations, all of which are structurally complete with tracks, entry and exit points, and finishing works in place. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has initiated an extensive 500-hour testing phase to evaluate system performance, safety, and operational reliability before opening the corridor for public use.
The ongoing trial phase is a critical step in ensuring the metro system meets stringent safety and efficiency standards. The testing will assess multiple parameters, including train operations, signalling systems, braking performance, and overall system integration.
Following the completion of internal trials, the project will undergo inspections by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS)—mandatory approvals required before passenger services can begin.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The commencement of trial runs in Surat Metro reflects the steady progress of Tier-2 cities in adopting world-class urban mobility solutions. Such projects are critical for supporting economic growth while ensuring sustainable and efficient transportation systems.”
The Surat Metro project, spanning 40.35 kilometres across two corridors, is designed to significantly improve connectivity in one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres. The Diamond Corridor, in particular, is expected to play a vital role in connecting key residential, commercial, and industrial zones.
Future extensions toward Majura Gate and other key areas are also planned, further strengthening the network’s reach and accessibility.
The metro system is poised to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and offer a reliable alternative to road-based transport, aligning with broader national goals of sustainable urban development.
With infrastructure readiness achieved on the priority stretch, the focus now shifts to ensuring operational excellence through comprehensive testing and regulatory approvals. The successful completion of this phase will pave the way for commercial operations in the near future.
As trial runs continue, Surat moves closer to joining the league of Indian cities with operational metro systems, reinforcing its position as a modern, infrastructure-driven urban hub.
