Kalpataru-SOMA JV bags ₹1,522 Cr Contract for Delhi Metro's Inderlok–Indraprastha Magenta Line Extn

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has awarded a major underground construction package for the Inderlok–Indraprastha Corridor under Delhi Metro Phase IV to the Kalpataru-SOMA Joint Venture. The Letter of Acceptance (LOA) has been issued for Contract D2C-06, which includes the design and construction of twin tunnels and four underground stations along the upcoming Magenta Line extension.

The contract, valued at ₹1,522 crore, marks another significant milestone in the expansion of Delhi Metro’s underground network across some of the most densely populated areas of Central Delhi. The project is scheduled to be completed within 42 months from the date of Notice to Proceed (NTP), with CPM-1, DMRC serving as the Engineer for the contract.

Major Underground Construction Package Under Phase IV

The scope of Contract D2C-06 covers the construction of twin tunnels using Shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) as well as other underground construction methods along a stretch extending from chainage 614.483 metres to 7,629.531 metres on the down line of the corridor.

The package also includes the construction of four underground stations at Dayabasti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, and Jhandewalan Mandir, along with balance works for Nabi Karim station. In addition, the contract involves launching and retrieval shafts, architectural finishing, water supply systems, sanitary installations, drainage works, and associated entry-exit structures.

Originally proposed as an extension of the Green Line, the Inderlok–Indraprastha corridor was later integrated into the Magenta Line expansion strategy to improve operational connectivity and network integration across Delhi Metro.

Challenging Tunnelling Through Dense Urban Areas

The underground alignment passes beneath some of the busiest and most congested urban pockets in Delhi, including Dayabasti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Jhandewalan, and Nabi Karim. The project is expected to involve highly complex tunnelling operations due to dense habitation, narrow road corridors, underground utilities, and the need to maintain uninterrupted urban activity during construction.

Urban transport experts believe this package is among the most technically demanding civil contracts awarded under Delhi Metro Phase IV so far.

Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “The Inderlok–Indraprastha underground corridor represents a critical step in strengthening Delhi’s multimodal urban mobility ecosystem. Executing deep underground tunnelling beneath highly populated urban zones requires world-class engineering precision, advanced monitoring systems, and meticulous planning. Projects like these demonstrate the growing sophistication of India’s metro infrastructure capabilities.”

The corridor is also expected to significantly improve east-west connectivity in Delhi while reducing traffic congestion on some of the city’s heavily burdened road corridors.

Key Component of Delhi Metro Phase IV Expansion

The Inderlok–Indraprastha corridor forms part of the larger Delhi Metro Phase IV expansion programme, which has evolved into one of the most ambitious urban transit projects currently under implementation in India.

Phase IV was initially approved with three priority corridors covering around 65 km. However, the scope was expanded in March 2024 with the addition of the Inderlok–Indraprastha and Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block corridors, increasing the total network length to 85.86 km. The subsequent inclusion of the Rithala–Narela–Kundli corridor in December 2024 further extended the programme to approximately 112.32 km.

The overall Phase IV project is estimated to cost around ₹46,845 crore and includes several strategically important metro corridors aimed at improving connectivity across Delhi and the National Capital Region.

Among the major ongoing projects are the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg Magenta Line extension, the Aerocity–Tughlakabad Golden Line corridor, and the Maujpur–Majlis Park Pink Line extension.

Once completed, the Inderlok–Indraprastha Magenta Line extension is expected to play a crucial role in decongesting Delhi’s transport network while offering faster and more seamless travel options for commuters travelling through Central and North Delhi.
