Lucknow, India (Metro Rail Today): The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has invited bids for the procurement of 45 standard gauge metro train cars for the Lucknow Metro Phase 1B project, marking another significant step towards expanding the city's mass rapid transit network. The procurement, valued at approximately ₹670 crore, is expected to enhance operational capacity and support the growing demand for safe, efficient and sustainable urban mobility in the state capital.
The tender presents a major opportunity for domestic and international rolling stock manufacturers, signalling technology providers and railway system suppliers to participate in one of India's expanding metro rail projects.
According to the tender, the scope of work includes the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of 45 standard gauge metro train cars equipped with modern passenger amenities and advanced safety features. The contract also includes the deployment of state-of-the-art signalling and train control systems, ensuring seamless integration with the existing Lucknow Metro network.
The new fleet is being procured to support the implementation of Lucknow Metro Phase 1B, which aims to strengthen connectivity across the city while accommodating future growth in passenger ridership. The addition of modern rolling stock is expected to improve service frequency, optimise train operations and enhance the overall commuting experience.
The advanced signalling systems proposed under the project will further improve operational reliability by enabling efficient train movement, enhanced safety standards and better network management.
"Investment in modern rolling stock and intelligent train control systems is essential for building future-ready metro networks. As cities continue to expand, the integration of advanced technology with high-capacity public transport infrastructure will play a crucial role in improving commuter experience, increasing operational efficiency and promoting sustainable urban mobility. Projects such as Lucknow Metro Phase 1B demonstrate India's continued commitment to developing world-class urban transit systems," said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group.
Lucknow Metro has emerged as one of India's successful urban transit systems, offering commuters a fast, reliable and environmentally friendly alternative to road transport. The proposed expansion under Phase 1B is expected to extend the benefits of metro connectivity to additional residential, commercial and institutional areas, supporting the city's rapid urbanisation.
The induction of new metro train cars will enable UPMRC to increase passenger carrying capacity, improve service reliability and reduce waiting times during peak travel hours. Enhanced signalling and train control technologies will also contribute to smoother operations and higher standards of passenger safety.
India's metro rail sector continues to witness strong investment as governments focus on expanding urban public transport infrastructure to address rising traffic congestion and environmental concerns. The latest procurement by UPMRC is expected to attract participation from leading rolling stock manufacturers and rail technology companies, further strengthening the country's metro rail ecosystem.
With metro projects under implementation across several Indian cities, demand for advanced rolling stock, signalling systems and digital rail technologies continues to grow. The Lucknow Metro Phase 1B rolling stock tender represents another important milestone in the development of modern, sustainable and technology-driven public transport infrastructure, reinforcing Lucknow's position as one of India's rapidly evolving metro cities.
