Thane Metro to commence Trial Run in September, Full launch likely by December 2025

Thane, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant boost to Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s (MMR) urban transport network, the Thane Metro is set to commence trial runs in September 2025, with a full commercial launch targeted by December 2025. The corridor, being developed as Metro Line 4 and its extensions, will directly link Thane to Wadala via Kasarvadavali, easing congestion and offering seamless multimodal integration.

According to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials, civil works on the Thane stretch are in the final stages, with track laying, electrification, and signaling integration progressing at speed. The September trial will test rolling stock performance, signaling systems, and platform operations before the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) conducts final inspections.
If all approvals are secured on schedule, the line is expected to begin public operations in December 2025.

The Thane Metro section is part of the 32.32 km Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Kasarvadavali) and 2.88 km Line 4A (Kasarvadavali–Gaimukh) corridors. Once fully operational, Line 4 will connect Mumbai, Thane, and the eastern suburbs through 32 stations, providing interchange with Mumbai Metro Lines 2B, 5, and 11, as well as suburban railways and the upcoming Thane–Borivali underground tunnel.

The project will:

  • Reduce travel time between Wadala and Thane from 1.5 hours to about 50 minutes.

  • Cut traffic load on Eastern Express Highway.

  • Provide last-mile connectivity via feeder bus and e-mobility services.

Integration with Wider MMR Metro Expansion

The Thane Metro rollout aligns with MMRDA’s aggressive push to commission four new metro corridors by end-2025, including:

  • Metro Line 2B (DN Nagar–Mandale)

  • Metro Line 7A (Gundavali–CSMIA)

  • Metro Line 9 (Dahisar–Mira Bhayandar)

  • Metro Line 10/11 (Gaimukh–Shivaji Chowk–CSMT)

Additionally, MMRDA is planning a unified ticketing platform through the Mumbai One App, enabling QR-based ticketing and seamless transfers across metro, monorail, BEST buses, and suburban rail.

Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, welcomed the announcement, saying:

“The Thane Metro’s upcoming launch marks a major leap in the region’s journey toward integrated, sustainable urban mobility. By bridging key economic and residential hubs, this corridor will not only cut travel time but also promote transit-oriented development. MMRDA’s coordinated expansion strategy ensures that metro investments create long-term socio-economic value while reducing carbon emissions.”

Post-trial runs, safety audits, and CMRS approvals will determine the exact commercial launch date. MMRDA has assured that all systems—rolling stock, signaling, communications, and station facilities—will be fully functional before passenger services begin.
