Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a move aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and alleviating traffic congestion, the Tamil Nadu state government is considering the establishment of a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), inspired by the success of the Semi High-Speed Railway (SHR) between New Delhi and Meerut. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu confirmed that the RRTS project is designed to offer faster and more efficient public transport options, improving travel time for commuters across the region.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will conduct detailed feasibility studies to explore the viability of the SHR system, which will feature trains running at speeds of up to 160 km/h. The proposed RRTS will span three major corridors: Chennai-Chengalpattu-Tindivanam-Villupuram (167 km), Chennai-Kanchipuram-Vellore (140 km), and Coimbatore-Tiruppur-Erode-Salem (185 km). These routes were selected based on their high footfall and potential to significantly enhance regional mobility, according to the Minister.
Finance Secretary T. Udayachandran highlighted that the RRTS would especially benefit commuters living in the outskirts of Chennai, providing them with quicker access to major workplaces in the city. The project is expected to reduce travel time and improve the overall commuting experience.
In addition to the RRTS plans, the state government is also working on expanding the Chennai Metro network. Detailed project reports (DPRs) are being prepared for metro rail projects along two new routes: Tambaram to Velachery via Guindy (covering 21 km) and Lighthouse to High Court (covering 6 km). These expansions are set to enhance connectivity within Chennai, reducing congestion on roadways.
Further, plans are underway to extend the Chennai airport metro line to Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus in Kilambakkam, covering 15.46 km at an estimated cost of Rs 9,335 crore. Another extension project aims to connect the Koyambedu line to Pattabiram via Avadi, spanning 21.76 km at a cost of Rs 9,744 crore. A third metro extension will cover 27.9 km from Poonamallee to Sunkuvarchatram via Sriperumpudur, costing Rs 8,779 crore.
In addition to these urban metro projects, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the Avinashi and Sathyamangalam road routes in Coimbatore have been submitted for the central government's equity contribution.
These initiatives reflect the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to improving public transport infrastructure and making travel within the state faster, safer, and more convenient for residents and visitors alike.
