Mumbai, India (Rail & Metro Today): The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has granted safety clearance for the rolling stock planned for initial operations on Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A, bringing the two corridors closer to the commencement of passenger services.
The clearance has been issued to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL). However, the corridors will require other mandatory safety approvals before passenger operations can begin.
In a significant operational arrangement, Metro 4 and 4A could become the first Mumbai Metro corridor to commence operations without a dedicated car depot.
The Mogharpada Depot, planned along Ghodbunder Road in Thane, is yet to be completed. Until then, Gaimukh Metro Station and the section beyond it will serve as the interim facility for stabling and maintaining trains.
A maintenance pit has been constructed at Gaimukh for this purpose. The station has two island platforms and four tracks, with two tracks earmarked for passenger services and the remaining two for stabling and servicing metro rakes.
The first operational phase is expected to deploy six six-car metro rakes.
However, the new rolling stock procured specifically for Metro 4 and 4A has not yet arrived. In the interim, BEML-manufactured trains currently stationed at Charkop Depot and operating on Metro Lines 2A, 7 and 9 are expected to be deployed on the new corridor.
These Make in India metro rakes had already received safety approval for operation on Mumbai's western suburban corridors. CMRS clearance for their deployment on Metro 4 and 4A was sought on the basis of the earlier approval.
MMRDA awarded the rolling stock and signalling contracts for Metro 4 and 4A to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Alstom in February 2025.
The contracts include the supply of 39 driverless six-car trainsets comprising a total of 234 coaches. Once the new trains are delivered, they will undergo fresh CMRS certification before being inducted into passenger service.
The complete Metro 4 and 4A corridor will connect Wadala, Ghatkopar, Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh, covering a total length of 35.2 km.
Metro 4: Wadala–Kasarvadavali — 32.32 km
Metro 4A: Kasarvadavali–Gaimukh — 2.88 km
The first phase proposed for opening is the 10.5-km Gaimukh–Cadbury Junction section, covering 10 stations:
Cadbury Junction, Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Tikuji-ni-wadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavali, Govaniwada and Gaimukh.
Trial runs on the corridor were flagged off on 22 September 2025, initially covering the section between Gaimukh, Govaniwada, Kasarvadavali and Vijay Garden.
With the rolling stock now receiving CMRS safety clearance, Metro 4 and 4A have crossed another major milestone towards opening their first phase for passengers, subject to the completion of remaining statutory certifications and safety approvals. The new corridor is expected to provide important connectivity along the busy Ghodbunder Road and Thane urban region, while future phases will extend the line towards Wadala in Mumbai.
