Kochi Metro explores Light Rail Urban Trams to enhance urban mobility

Kochi, India (Metro Rail Today): Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is exploring innovative solutions to enhance urban mobility, especially with the proposed introduction of 'light trams' as part of the 'metro neo' extension.

As the city's Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) is awaited, KMRL officials are gearing up for discussions with a firm specializing in 'light trams'. These talks aim to evaluate the feasibility of deploying these trams along the 4-km MG Road-Menaka-Park Avenue Road-Hospital Road-MG Road loop line, as well as other corridors facing challenges like land acquisition and high capital investment for traditional metro construction.

Both 'metro neo' and 'light trams' present themselves as cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to conventional metro systems, offering comparable commuter capacity while providing greater flexibility in deployment and operation.

If the plan comes to fruition, these 'light trams', akin to a refined version of bus-rapid transport systems, could function as feeder services for the Kochi Metro. This move would likely boost ridership along the Aluva-MG Road-Thripunithura phase-1 corridor, seamlessly integrating with Water Metro ferries operating from the High Court terminal.

Similar light tram systems are already operational in locations like Brisbane, sparking discussions on their potential implementation in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, besides Kochi. The firm has initiated dialogue with KMRL regarding this initiative.

Previously, KMRL had considered 'metro neo' as an alternative mass rapid transport system for the loop line and the Thripunithura-Infopark corridor. However, a final decision on the most suitable system for the city, taking into account factors like capital investment savings and operational efficiency, is imminent.

The concept of 'metro neo' emerged in 2022, following an analysis of commuter travel patterns, highlighting the need for enhanced connectivity beyond MG Road to densely populated areas like High Court Junction, Marine Drive, Ernakulam Market, Broadway commercial hub, and Park Avenue Road.
