Peak Speed of 180 km/h Achieved During Trials
In an exciting development, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains have reached a peak speed of 180 km/h during successful trials in Rajasthan’s Kota Division. These trials, which began in late December, have demonstrated the train's remarkable speed and stability, even when fully loaded with passengers and luggage. The final trials will continue until the end of January before the trains are officially inducted into regular service.
Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared the success on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing a video that highlighted the train’s smooth performance at peak speed. The video captured a near-full glass of water on a mobile phone placed on a flat surface inside the train, demonstrating the exceptional comfort of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train, even while cruising at 180 km/h.
Successful Trials Across Key Routes
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains achieved impressive results during several test runs. On January 1, 2025, the train reached a peak speed of 180 km/h during a 40 km trial run between Rohal Khurd and Kota. On January 2, another trial between Kota and Laban in Bundi district showed the train maintaining its peak speed over a 30 km stretch.
In addition to the 180 km/h trials, speeds of 170 km/h and 160 km/h were achieved on other key routes, including the Kota-Nagda and Rohal Khurd-Chau Mahla sections. These tests will continue under the supervision of the Research, Design & Standards Organization (RDSO) of Lucknow until the end of the month.
Comfort and Luxury in Long-Distance Travel
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are designed to offer more than just speed. Featuring automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard Wi-Fi, and a sleek, aircraft-like design, these trains promise an exceptional travel experience for long-distance commuters. The challenge for Indian Railways was to adapt the existing Vande Bharat design by adding berths and ensuring the trains could carry a full passenger and luggage load while maintaining the high-speed capabilities.
Once the final safety and speed evaluations are complete, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will be ready for service on key long-distance routes, such as Delhi to Mumbai, Howrah to Chennai, and Kashmir to Kanyakumari. With the ability to travel at speeds of up to 180 km/h, these trains will significantly reduce travel times, providing commuters with faster and more comfortable options than ever before.
A Transformative Shift in Rail Travel
Vande Bharat trains are already operating on numerous Shatabdi routes, offering passengers a luxurious travel experience. As India’s fastest train, capable of reaching speeds of 180 km/h, the Vande Bharat Express has become a symbol of modern Indian engineering, offering a seamless blend of speed, comfort, and technology.
The introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains for long-distance travel marks a milestone in the modernization of Indian railways. Passengers will not only benefit from reduced travel times but will also enjoy a world-class travel experience, redefining how India travels by rail.
