Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major boost to the expansion of the Pune Metro network, ITD Cementation India Ltd has been declared the lowest bidder (L1) for the Swargate to Katraj underground extension of the Purple Line, under Package P1A-UGC(R). The announcement was made by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) following the opening of financial bids on Wednesday.
The 5.46-km underground extension forms a key part of Pune Metro Phase 1A, and will feature twin tunnels and five underground stations at Market Yard (Gultekdi), Bibwewadi, Padmawati, Balaji Nagar, and Katraj. The work is expected to be completed in 42 months, with full operations targeted by February 2029.
The competitive tender attracted bids from six major infrastructure players. Here are the financial bid results:
Firm | Bid Value (in Crore) |
---|---|
ITD Cementation Ltd | ₹1,643.88 (L1) |
J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd | ₹1,738.94 (L2) |
Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) | ₹1,747.00 (L3) |

As per Maha Metro, the estimated cost of this tender was ₹2,144 crore and the ITD Cementation’s bid is 24% below the estimate.
Originally planned with three stations, the scope of the project was expanded to five stations following public consultations and government stakeholder feedback. This raised the project’s total cost from ₹2,954.53 crore to ₹3,637 crore.
The extension will act as a southern expansion of the existing District Court–Swargate underground corridor, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2024.
Maha-Metro’s tender scope under Package P1A-UGC(R) includes:
Construction of five underground stations
Tunneling through twin underground tunnels
Deployment of at least four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)
Works split into Stage I (Market Yard, Padmavati, Katraj) and Stage II (Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar)
If the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) is issued by the end of 2025, the following timeline is anticipated:
Q1 2026: Site mobilisation and utility shifting
Q2 2026: Start of civil construction
Q2 2027: Tunneling works begin
Once operational, the extended corridor is expected to significantly enhance metro coverage in southern Pune, linking key residential and commercial zones to the city’s growing metro network. With tunneling and civil works soon to begin, this project will be closely watched as one of India’s most ambitious metro expansions through a densely populated urban corridor.
