World Bank approves ₹1,400 crore Civil Tender for Gurugram Metro Phase 2

Gurugram, India (Metro Rail Today): Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has achieved a major project milestone after securing World Bank approval to float the civil tender for Phase-II construction of the Gurugram Metro corridor between Sector 9 and CyberHub. Estimated at around ₹1,400 crore, the package will cover construction of the metro viaduct and 14 stations, with tender issuance expected within the coming week.

The development marks a significant step forward for Gurugram’s independent metro network and supports the city’s long-term mobility vision through improved integration with regional transit systems.

Confirming the progress, Chander Shekhar Khare, Managing Director, GMRL, said:

“GMRL has received approval from the World Bank for the civil tender for construction of Phase Two of the Gurugram Metro. We will float the tender within a week as all the groundwork for floating the tender has been completed.”

Phase-II will involve development of a 13-km metro corridor from Sector 9 to CyberHub, expanding connectivity across major residential, commercial and employment zones. The proposed section will include stations at Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23A, Sector 22, Udyog Vihar Phase 4, Udyog Vihar Phase 5, Cyber City, along with a station on the spur line connecting Gurugram Railway Station.

A major feature of the project will be multimodal integration. The corridor is planned to connect with both the Rapid Metro network and the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) through an interchange at Shankar Chowk, creating stronger transit connectivity across Gurugram and the wider NCR region.

The Gurugram Metro project, spanning 30.7 km across both phases, will include 28 stations, a central metro depot at Sector 33, and two strategic spurs—one extending towards Sector 102 near Dwarka Expressway and another connecting to Gurugram Railway Station.

Alongside progress on the corridor package, GMRL announced that the ₹409 crore depot tender for Sector 33 will be re-issued after the earlier procurement round attracted only one eligible bidder.

Khare said the re-tendering exercise will be undertaken on priority to encourage wider participation and maintain implementation schedules.

At the same time, GMRL is accelerating enabling works for the already under-construction Phase-I corridor between Millennium City Centre and Sector 9. The corporation has requested the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite utility shifting and remove remaining infrastructure constraints between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, including relocation of a power substation.

To support seamless execution of Phase-II works, GMRL has also coordinated with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) regarding reconstruction activities along the Leg One drain near Sushil Aima Road in Palam Vihar, where metro construction will run in parallel.

According to officials, GMDA has already floated a tender for the drain redevelopment, which is expected to support faster implementation of the metro corridor.

Construction of Phase-I (13 km) began in September last year, with a project cost of approximately ₹1,277 crore and a scheduled completion target of August 2028. GMRL stated that nearly 8% of construction progress has been achieved so far.

Commenting on the project’s broader significance, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:

“Urban mobility projects today must be developed as integrated transport ecosystems rather than standalone corridors. Gurugram Metro’s planned integration with Rapid Metro and Namo Bharat reflects the future of seamless urban and regional connectivity that modern cities increasingly require.”

With World Bank-backed procurement now moving ahead and enabling works being accelerated, Gurugram Metro continues to move closer to creating a comprehensive and future-ready transit network for the city.
