Siemens Bags Order from Titagarh Rail Systems for Pune Metro Extension Trainsets

Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): Siemens Limited has secured a significant order from Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) for the supply of advanced propulsion systems and Train Control & Monitoring Systems (TCMS) for the Pune Metro Rail Project extension, further strengthening indigenous rail technology capabilities under the Government of India’s Make in India initiative.

Under the scope of the contract, Siemens will undertake the design, manufacture, supply and warranty support of critical onboard systems for 12 metro trainsets, including traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors and Train Control & Monitoring Systems (TCMS). These systems form the technological backbone of modern metro rolling stock, enabling efficient traction performance, enhanced operational monitoring, predictive diagnostics and improved passenger service reliability.

The order marks another important collaboration between two major players in India’s rail manufacturing ecosystem and reflects the growing emphasis on localisation and advanced metro technologies as Indian cities continue to expand urban transit infrastructure.

Commenting on the development, Rajeev Joisar, Chief Executive Officer – Mobility Business, Siemens Limited, said:

“We are pleased to partner with Titagarh Rail Systems Limited on the Pune Metro project. This collaboration is an important step in our journey to support India’s rapidly growing metro market with advanced Propulsion and TCMS technologies. As India continues to invest in sustainable urban transportation, the development of a strong local manufacturing and technology ecosystem becomes increasingly important. Aligned with the Make in India initiative, we are committed to develop these advanced technologies by leveraging Siemens’ strong manufacturing and engineering footprint in India.”

The partnership also reinforces India’s growing capability to manufacture sophisticated rail technologies domestically and reduce dependence on imports.

Sharing his views on the collaboration, Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, said:

“We are delighted to partner with Siemens on the Pune Metro project, for advanced indigenous propulsion systems, reinforcing our strong commitment to Make in India through near-complete localisation. Pune Metro always holds a special place for us, as it marks Titagarh’s entry into the passenger rail systems space and the introduction of India’s first aluminium-bodied metro coaches. This additional option contract further strengthens the aluminium train ecosystem in the country. Together, this partnership will accelerate indigenisation and serves as a great start to a long potential partnership between Titagarh Rail Systems Limited & Siemens for the Indian urban mobility landscape.”

The Pune Metro project continues to emerge as an important showcase for next-generation urban transit solutions in India. Titagarh’s aluminium-bodied metro train platform and Siemens’ propulsion and digital train technologies are expected to enhance operational efficiency, passenger comfort and lifecycle performance of the network.

Adding industry perspective, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:

“Partnerships that combine indigenous manufacturing capabilities with advanced rail technologies are essential for accelerating India’s urban mobility transformation. The collaboration between Titagarh Rail Systems and Siemens reflects the direction in which India’s metro ecosystem is evolving—towards localisation, innovation and globally competitive transit solutions that support sustainable city development.”

The latest order also highlights increasing collaboration between Indian rolling stock manufacturers and global technology providers to create a competitive domestic rail manufacturing ecosystem capable of serving both Indian and international markets.
