Bhubaneswar, India (Metro Rail Today): In a historic event held today at Trishulia Square, north of Bhubaneswar city, Odisha's Chief Minister unveiled the foundation stone for the ambitious Bhubaneswar Metro Phase 1 project. This significant step marks the initiation of a transformative infrastructure project that is set to redefine urban mobility in the region.
Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project Phase 1 is an extensive 26.024 km-long network that will seamlessly connect Trisulia Square with Biju Patnaik Airport, featuring a total of 20 elevated stations along its route. The project's Detailed Project Report (DPR), meticulously prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), received approval from Odisha's state government on November 14, 2023, with a targeted completion deadline of four years.
A key highlight of this groundbreaking project is its estimated cost of Rs 6,225 crore, entirely funded by the state government. Remarkably, this investment represents the largest financial commitment to any infrastructure project in the history of Odisha, emphasizing the government's dedication to advancing transportation and connectivity in the state.
The proud owner of the project, the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation, is a wholly-owned entity of the state government, overseeing the planning, execution, and management of this transformative endeavor.
Strategic Station Locations and Project Progress
The metro line will feature strategically located elevated stations at critical points, including Biju Patnaik Airport, Capital Hospital, Sishu Bhawan, Bapuji Nagar, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Ram Mandir Square, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar Square, Jaydev Vihar Square, Xavier Square, Rail Sadan, District Centre, Damana Square, Patia Square, KIIT Square, Nandan Vihar, Raghunathpur, Nandankanan Zoological Park, Phulapokhari, and Trisulia.
In November 2023, DMRC assumed the role of the project's turn-key consultant, entrusted with executing the intricate details of the initiative. Noteworthy developments include the awarding of tenders for constructing staff quarters, secured by NBCC, and the construction of a boundary wall around an 18.50-hectare parcel designated for the Phulapokhari Depot in north Bhubaneswar.
While the construction timeline is yet to commence, the groundwork laid so far positions the project for future success. A Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) is pending an appointment for the design of civil, architectural, electrical & mechanical (E&M) works. With the foundation stone unveiled, anticipation builds for the impending tender notice for the DDC, signaling the project's progression towards its next phase.
Looking Ahead: Bhubaneswar Metro's Role in India's Transportation Landscape
As of now, construction work is projected to commence at least 10 months from the date of the foundation stone unveiling. Upon initiation, Bhubaneswar Metro will proudly join the ranks of India's metro rail systems, marking a significant leap forward in the region's transportation infrastructure. The project's success will not only enhance connectivity but also contribute to the economic and social development of Odisha.
Conclusion: A New Era in Odisha's Transportation
The unveiling of the foundation stone for Bhubaneswar Metro Phase 1 symbolizes a new era in Odisha's transportation landscape. The ambitious project, with its strategic planning, substantial investment, and commitment to excellence, sets the stage for a transformative impact on urban mobility. As construction awaits its commencement, the people of Odisha anticipate the realization of a modern and efficient metro system that will stand as a testament to the state's progress.
