From Paper to Platform: How Mumbai Metro’s Digital Ticketing Is Redefining Urban Mobility?
Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): Belarus-based RIFTEK, a global specialist in electronic measurement instruments, has strengthened its collaboration with Indian metro operators by announcing two key milestones in the deployment of its advanced wheel measurement technologies. The company confirmed the receipt of an annual performance certificate for its 3DWheel real-time wheel geometry measurement system operating in the Delhi Metro, alongside the successful completion of Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for the first of three systems commissioned under a new order.
RIFTEK’s 3DWheel system—designed for continuous, real-time monitoring of wheel geometry—has completed its second year of trouble-free operation in the Delhi Metro network. The annual performance certificate formally recognises its reliability and accuracy, reaffirming the system’s role in supporting predictive maintenance and ensuring safer, more efficient rolling stock management.
The 3DWheel system measures a comprehensive range of wheel-set parameters, including flange height, flange thickness, flange gradient, root wear, tread hollow, rim thickness, diameter, back-to-back distance and more. These measurements provide crucial data for metro operators to monitor wheel health, minimise downtime and enhance safety.
RIFTEK also announced the successful FAT for the first of three systems being manufactured for a new order. Representatives from the customer and its Indian partner, Swastik Overseas, visited RIFTEK’s facilities to inspect production processes, documentation, software functionality and overall system quality.
During the acceptance procedure, joint teams conducted accuracy and reproducibility tests, including an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), confirming the system meets all required performance characteristics. Following the successful FAT, approval has been granted for installation at the Mandale Depot in Mumbai—one of the largest metro depots in Asia.
The adoption of real-time wheel measurement technologies is becoming increasingly essential for India’s rapidly growing metro network. With new corridors launching across major cities, automated, high-precision diagnostic systems such as RIFTEK’s 3DWheel are expected to play a crucial role in preventive maintenance and efficient operations.
Offering an industry perspective, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “Advanced diagnostic tools like the 3DWheel system are transforming how Indian metro systems manage safety and fleet reliability. Real-time, high-accuracy data is critical for modern urban transit, and partnerships with global technology leaders will accelerate India’s shift toward smarter, more efficient metro operations.”
As India continues to expand its metro infrastructure at an unprecedented pace, RIFTEK’s growing presence reflects the rising demand for automated, high-precision systems that enable world-class maintenance standards and long asset life cycles across the country’s urban rail networks.
