YFC Projects wins Subway Contract to link Delhi Airport T2 to IGI Metro Station

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for Delhi's transportation infrastructure, YFC Projects emerged as the lowest bidder for the construction of a 70-meter-long subway connecting Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 2 with the IGI Airport Metro Station along the 24.58 km Airport Express Line. The announcement was made on November 12, 2023.

The new subway, spanning a length of 70 meters, is designed to enhance connectivity between Terminal 2 and the IGI Airport Metro Station, providing a seamless underground link for passengers. The subway, measuring 10 meters in width and 4.2 meters in height, will be constructed using the box pushing method. Currently, passengers face a roughly 500-meter walk to reach the station, and this new development aims to significantly reduce travel time.

The construction of this subway is governed by a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) in May 2023. The initiative seeks to streamline passenger movement and enhance the overall experience at the airport.

In August, DMRC initiated the bidding process for this crucial contract, estimating it at Rs 26.60 crore and setting a deadline of 1.7 years for completion. The technical bids, opened in September, revealed two contenders – SAS Infratech and YFC Projects. However, SAS Infratech was disqualified during the evaluation phase for not meeting the tender’s conditions.

YFC Projects secured the contract with a winning bid of Rs 25.22 crore, demonstrating cost-effectiveness and efficiency in their approach. This bid was notably below DMRC’s estimate, paving the way for a swift contract award process without an extended financial evaluation period.

DMRC's brief outlines the scope of the project, encompassing the design and construction of a pedestrian subway between the existing IGI Airport Metro station at Terminal-3 to Terminal T-2, Delhi Airport. The construction method specified is the Box Pushing Method, which includes the creation of pushing and receiving shafts, entry/exit points, connection of the subway box with the existing metro station, and architectural finishing works.

According to the MoU between DMRC and DIAL, the cost of construction and utility shifting works will be borne by DIAL, while DMRC will take charge of operations and maintenance. This includes responsibilities for electrical and mechanical fittings, telecom, lifts and escalators, CCTV surveillance, security systems, and PA systems.

YFC Projects' successful bid for this pivotal subway construction project signifies a milestone in the efforts to enhance connectivity at Indira Gandhi International Airport. With a focus on efficiency and cost-effectiveness, YFC Projects is poised to play a crucial role in streamlining passenger movement and improving the overall airport experience. As the contract award process moves forward, the city anticipates the realization of this essential infrastructure development in the coming weeks.
