New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The 16th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2023 concluded on a high note, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable urban mobility solutions. Distinguished figures, including Manoj Joshi, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, and Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, graced the valedictory session with their presence.

In a compelling address, Secretary MoHUA, Manoj Joshi, underscored the crucial role of smart cards as a convenient and efficient means of payment for commuters. He shed light on the ongoing government initiatives towards the adoption of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), emphasizing its potential to enhance the interoperability of various urban transport modes.

The event saw the well-deserved distribution of awards for "Excellence/Best practice projects in Urban Transport," recognizing commendable contributions in various categories. The notable awardees included:

    • Third prize - Dilawaiz Ali, NIT Srinagar
    • Second prize - Karthika P Sobhana, IISC Bangalore
    • First prize - Aishree Boruah, IIT Hyderabad
  2. Certificate for Innovation

  3. Trophy for the Best Exhibition in the Conference & Expo

  4. Awards for “Excellence in Urban Transport”

    • City with the Best Public Transport System - Srinagar Smart City Limited for Srinagar’s Multimodal Transport System project.
    • City with the Best Non-Motorized Transport System - Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation for NMT friendly Pimple Saudagar Neighbourhood project.
    • City with the Most Innovative Financing Mechanism - Jabalpur City Transport Services Limited for their Financial Mechanism for Sustainable City Bus Services project.
    • City with the Best Record of Public Involvement in its Transport Planning - Sustainable Transport and Efficient Mobility Society (STEMS), East Khasi Hills (Shillong) for their Shared Commuter Service project.
    • City with the Best Green Transport Initiative - Kochi Metro Rail Limited for their Kochi Water Metro project.
    • Metro Rail with the Best Multimodal Integration - Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for their Multi-Modal Integration Project for 30 Stations of Mumbai Metro Line 2A & 7.
    • Metro Rail with the Best Passenger Services and Satisfaction - Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. for the Delhi Metro Rail project, and Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. for the Lucknow Metro Rail project.
    • Running trophy for the State/UT which has implemented the Best Urban Transport Projects - Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) for their Mo Bus & Mo E-Ride.

Joshi delved into the critical discussions surrounding the financing and viability of urban transport projects. He emphasized the imperative need for innovative funding mechanisms and public-private partnerships to meet the growing demands of urban transportation infrastructure. The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) emerged as a significant focus, with Joshi stressing the importance of EV adoption to reduce emissions and advocating for investments in EV infrastructure.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in collaboration with the Institute of Urban Transport (India) and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., brought together a global confluence of leaders, experts, and stakeholders to deliberate and collaborate on the future of urban transportation. The exhibition, featuring the latest urban transport technologies and services, was inaugurated by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas, setting the tone for a vibrant and engaging three-day conference.
