Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major development for India’s urban transport sector, Adani Group has bagged its first-ever civil infrastructure contract — a ₹1,644 crore order awarded by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) for the construction of the Swargate–Katraj underground section of the Pune Metro’s Purple Line.
The contract has been officially awarded to ITD Cementation India Limited, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, marking the conglomerate’s significant entry into India’s urban rail construction segment.
The awarded package — P1A-UGC(R) — covers the design and construction of twin tunnels and three underground metro stations on the 5.46 km Swargate–Katraj stretch. The project aims to enhance north–south connectivity, ease urban congestion, and reduce pollution in one of Pune’s busiest travel corridors.
The line will extend the existing PCMC–Swargate corridor, connecting southern Pune to Pimpri-Chinchwad. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2025, with a completion target of February 2029.
The Swargate–Katraj section will include five planned stations:
Balajinagar
Bibwewadi
Market Yard
Padmavati
Katraj
| Route | Swargate – Katraj (Underground) |
| Length | 5.46 km |
| Scope | Twin tunnels + 3–5 underground stations |
| Contract Value | ₹16.44 billion |
| Awarded To | ITD Cementation India Ltd. (Adani Group subsidiary) |
| Execution Timeline | 2025–2029 |
| Implementing Agency | Maha-Metro |
The second-lowest (L2) bidder for this package was J. Kumar Infraprojects Ltd. at ₹1,738 crore.
This extension is part of Pune Metro’s Phase II expansion, estimated at ₹2,954.53 crore, which received state government approval in late 2024. In September 2025, the Maharashtra Cabinet sanctioned an additional ₹683.11 crore to include two new stations — Balajinagar and Bibwewadi — along the route.
The existing 3.3 km underground section from District Court to Swargate was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in September 2024, completing the first leg of the Purple Line’s southern stretch.
The Swargate–Katraj extension, once complete, will create a continuous north–south metro link, drastically reducing travel time between PCMC and Katraj and improving last-mile connectivity across Pune’s growing suburbs.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, and Managing Editor, Metro Rail Today, commended the development, stating:
“The Adani Group’s entry into India’s metro construction space with the Pune Metro underground contract reflects growing private sector confidence in the country’s infrastructure growth story. Such partnerships will accelerate urban transformation, enhance passenger safety, and drive India closer to its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision of world-class mobility.”
The Swargate–Katraj underground section is not only a key addition to Pune’s metro network but also a milestone in India’s high-capacity, sustainable urban transit development. With the Adani Group joining hands with Maha-Metro, the project represents a fusion of engineering innovation, public-private collaboration, and future-ready mobility infrastructure.
