Chittaranjan, India (Metro Rail Today): In a landmark achievement for India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) has created history by producing a record 800 electric locomotives in the financial year 2025–26, the highest-ever annual output by any locomotive manufacturing unit under a single establishment globally.
This milestone underscores Indian Railways’ accelerating shift toward electrification, indigenous manufacturing, and sustainable mobility.
The historic output includes:
This surpasses the previous record of 700 locomotives in FY 2024–25, reflecting a significant year-on-year growth in production capacity.
The 800th locomotive, along with a set of advanced electric locomotives, was ceremonially flagged off on March 31, 2026, by Shri Mohit Chandra, General Manager, CLW, in the presence of senior officials and staff.
The final batch included cutting-edge locomotive variants designed to enhance operational efficiency and support next-generation train systems:
These locomotives are expected to play a crucial role in boosting both passenger and freight operations across the Indian Railways network.
In a parallel achievement, Dankuni Loco Works recorded its highest-ever annual production of 200 locomotives, marking a significant milestone since its inception.
The 200th locomotive from Dankuni was also flagged off earlier in the financial year, highlighting the growing contribution of the unit to India’s locomotive manufacturing capabilities.
The record production aligns with Indian Railways’ mission to achieve 100% electrification and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The deployment of these 800 electric locomotives is expected to:
CLW’s achievement reinforces its status as the world’s largest electric locomotive manufacturer under a single unit, setting new global benchmarks in scale and efficiency.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Mohit Chandra, General Manager, CLW, said:
“This remarkable milestone reflects the relentless dedication, teamwork, and technical excellence of Team CLW. Achieving 800 locomotives in a single financial year is a testament to our commitment to innovation, productivity, and supporting Indian Railways’ vision for a sustainable future.”
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:
“CLW’s record-breaking locomotive production is a defining moment for India’s railway manufacturing sector. It highlights the scale at which indigenous capabilities are evolving to meet both domestic and global demand. As India accelerates electrification and freight modernization, such achievements will play a critical role in strengthening supply chains, reducing carbon footprints, and positioning India as a global export hub for railway technologies.”
This milestone comes at a time when India’s railway sector is witnessing unprecedented growth in domestic manufacturing and exports. With strong policy support, increasing investments, and technological advancements, production units like CLW are central to building a self-reliant and globally competitive rail ecosystem.
