Gamuda awarded RM3.7 billion contract to build Keelung Mass Rapid Transit in Taiwan

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Rail & Metro Today): Malaysia-based construction and engineering group Gamuda Bhd has secured a RM3.7 billion contract to develop the Keelung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system and trackwork project in Taiwan, strengthening its presence in the international rail infrastructure market.

The contract has been awarded by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems under the New Taipei City Government. Gamuda will hold a 72.84% participating interest in the unincorporated joint venture, while Taiwan-based MiTAC Information Technology Co will hold the remaining 27.16%. Gamuda’s share of the contract is valued at approximately RM2.7 billion.

The project is expected to take 2,820 days, or around 7.7 years, to complete and represents an important addition to Gamuda’s growing portfolio of international transport infrastructure projects.

Keelung MRT to Connect Three Major Cities

The project covers trackwork and railway system installations along a 15.6-kilometre alignment serving 13 stations across Taipei City, New Taipei City and Keelung City. It forms part of the designated additional works associated with the Xizhi–Donghu MRT project, which Gamuda secured in October 2024.

The new infrastructure is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and support more efficient public transport services across the Taipei metropolitan area. By improving rail links between established urban centres and surrounding communities, the project will contribute to the development of an integrated regional mobility network.

The contract also highlights the growing importance of coordinated rail infrastructure development in major Asian cities, where rising urbanisation and travel demand are increasing the need for reliable mass transit systems.

Comprehensive Railway Systems and Trackwork

Beyond track construction, the contract encompasses a broad range of railway systems and equipment required for the operation of the MRT network. The scope includes rolling stock, power supply, signalling, platform screen doors, communication systems and central monitoring systems.

The project will also cover automatic fare collection systems and depot maintenance equipment, integrating essential operational components into the overall rail infrastructure.

The inclusion of these systems makes the contract more than a conventional civil engineering assignment. It involves the delivery of multiple interconnected railway technologies that must function together to support safe, reliable and efficient passenger services.

Overseas Projects Strengthen Gamuda’s Growth Outlook

Gamuda expects the Keelung MRT contract to contribute positively to its revenue and earnings from the financial year ending July 31, 2027, through to project completion.

The latest award follows two major overseas contracts announced by the group in the previous month. Its Australian joint venture secured a RM1.8 billion road-upgrade contract, while Gamuda also won a RM2.3 billion engineering, procurement and construction contract for Australia’s Mortlake Energy Hub.

The Keelung award further diversifies Gamuda’s international project portfolio and reinforces its position in large-scale infrastructure development. For Taiwan, the project represents another step towards strengthening regional rail connectivity through expanded mass transit infrastructure.

As cities across Asia continue to invest in sustainable urban mobility, projects combining civil works, track infrastructure and advanced railway systems are expected to remain an important part of the region’s transport development agenda.
