Afcons Infra launches Final Segment at Sabarmati Bridge for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2

Ahmedabad, India (Metro Rail Today): In a momentous achievement, Afcons Infrastructure celebrated the launch of the last precast box segment for the Sabarmati River Bridge, a crucial component of the 28.254 km Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project. This milestone, marked between piers P46 – P47, underscores the significant progress made in the construction of Package C1, spanning 14.36 km.

The newly launched bridge, measuring approximately 810 meters, serves as a vital link connecting the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to the Gujarat International Finance Tech City (GIFT City). Forming part of Phase 2’s Package C1, this segment is integral to enhancing connectivity in the region.

The Sabarmati Bridge, a key component of Package C1, comprises a total of 24 spans, with 340 segments in its construction. The construction process, initiated in May 2023 with the launch of the first segment, reached its pinnacle with the recent launch of the final segment. Notably, the construction site is situated 19.3 km upstream from the Blue Line’s Sabarmati Bridge built during Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 1 between 2018-2021 by Tata Projects – CCECC JV.

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) awarded Afcons Infrastructure the construction contract for Package C1 in the fourth quarter of 2020. The scope of Afcons' involvement includes the development of an 8.124 km elevated section from Motera Stadium to GNLU, featuring stations at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gam, and GNLU.

Additionally, Afcons is responsible for the construction of a 5.42 km section from GNLU to GIFT City. This section incorporates a bridge over the Sabarmati River and two stations at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and Gujarat International Finance Tech City (GIFT City).

Afcons Infrastructure's dedicated team commenced the launch of U-girders in December 2021, with an impressive 95% of these structural elements already in place. This accomplishment signifies the commendable progress achieved in the construction process.

While Afcons Infrastructure celebrates the completion of Package C1's Sabarmati Bridge, other segments of Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 are concurrently progressing. Ranjit Buildcon marked a significant milestone by launching the final U-girder for Package C2 in September, connecting GNLU to Gandhinagar’s Sector-1. Activities for Package C3, spanning from Sector-1 to Mahatma Mandir, began in March, indicating ongoing advancements in the project.

As Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 continues to shape the city's transportation landscape, each milestone represents a stride toward a more connected and efficient public transportation system.
