New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The Government of Andhra Pradesh is not seen much interested to implement metro rail systems in Vijayawada which has around 21.68 lakh urban pupulation. This city is identified as one of the first ten fast growing cities in India.
“On 01.09.2017, Government of Andhra Pradesh had been requested by Government of India to submit the revised proposal for the Project in line with Metro Rail Policy, 2017. No proposal has been submitted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in this regard." said Kaushal Kishore, Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in a written reply to Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar's question on 12th December 2022.
According to him, the center said that the state has been asked to send a proposal in accordance with the new metro policy, but it has not been submitted so far.
Kishore was replying to queries made to them asking whether it is a fact that in-spite of the request sent by Government in 2017 to the Andhra Pradesh Government to submit the revised proposal for Vijayawada Metro Rail Project in line with new Metro Policy, 2017, the Government of Andhra Pradesh had not submitted fresh proposals for Vijayawada Metro Rail Project.
A World class mass rapid transit system, a metro rail system is a much needed mode of public transport to meet the challenges of fast growing traffic scenario in Vijayawada and the surroundings.
The Metro Rail System would provide the commuters a fast, convenient, safer, comfortable, efficient and reliable, pollution free and eco friendly transport. This would enable the city achieve a sustainable growth from the social, economic and environmental perspectives.
Earlier in 2015, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) recommended for introducing Medium Metro system in 2 smaller corridors in the core city, of a total length of 26 km only. However, the State Government has decided to go for Light Metro system keeping in view of traffic demand during the next 30 years period and considering the travel needs to expand it to the Airport/Gannavaram on one side and to the new Capital City Amaravati on the other side.
Later, Systra-led consortium (Systra, RITES & GOPA) have prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new Light Metro Rail System as given below:-
