Bangalore Metro aims to open ORR and Airport Metro Corridors by September 2026

Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): The city of Bengaluru is set to witness a transformative change in its transportation infrastructure as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced the projected completion of the Central Silk Board to K R Puram (Phase 2A) and K R Puram to Kempegowda International Airport (Phase-2B) metro lines by September 2026. B L Yashavanth Chavan, the Chief Public Relations Officer of BMRCL, shared this information during a panel discussion on 'Namma Bengaluru-Better Infrastructure' organized by the iNFHRA (Infrastructure, Facility, Human Resource, and Realty Association), with support from the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA).

Chavan highlighted the upcoming connectivity between the Electronic City line and the Silk Board, facilitating seamless travel for professionals in the IT industry commuting to the airport. The integration of these crucial metro lines is expected to alleviate the commuting woes of the city's working population significantly.

According to the Comprehensive Development Plan, BMRCL is dedicated to establishing a 317-kilometer metro network by 2031. Chavan expressed the corporation's internal goal of reaching 450 kilometers by the same time frame, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing public transportation for the citizens of Bengaluru.

Srinivas Alavilli, an advocate for integrated transport and road safety at WRI India, shed light on the staggering number of vehicles in Bengaluru, which nearly equates to the city's total population. Alavalli emphasized the pressing need for increased reliance on public transportation, underscoring the essence of the ongoing Personal2Public campaign aimed at encouraging public transport usage.

Addressing the challenges faced by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), KR Vishwanath, the Chief Traffic Manager of Operations, pointed out the adverse impact of private vehicles on bus services. He revealed that during peak hours, buses were operating at speeds similar to that of pedestrians, highlighting the urgency to enhance public transit efficiency. Vishwanath further announced the corporation's plans to bolster green mobility with the incorporation of electric vehicles into their fleet, with an envisioned increase from the current 390 to 1,500 within the next six months.

R K Singh, the Director of K-RIDE overseeing the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project, unveiled the ambitious plan to run a suburban train every five minutes. He provided updates on the progress of ongoing work on one suburban corridor between Bennigenahalli and Chikkabanara (Corridor 2) and the upcoming finalization of tenders for the corridor between Heelalige and Rajanakunte.

Underlining the collaborative efforts towards improved infrastructure, Manas Das, President of ORRCA, emphasized the association's instrumental role in ensuring the establishment of footpaths around all metro stations. B S Prahlad, Engineer in Chief of BBMP, reaffirmed the city's commitment to a seamless and integrated transportation system by fostering partnerships with various public transport agencies.

With the promised expansion and integration of the metro lines, coupled with the continuous efforts towards promoting public transportation, Bengaluru anticipates a significant improvement in its overall traffic and transportation landscape, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient urban ecosystem.
