Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): BEML Limited has further strengthened its partnership with Bengaluru Metro after securing an additional order worth ₹414 crore from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The expansion will see BEML supply six more driverless metro trainsets—comprising 36 cars—for Phase 2 (Reach 5) of the city’s metro network. With this development, the total order increases from 60 trainsets (360 cars) to 66 trainsets (396 cars), reinforcing BEML’s leadership as the primary rolling stock supplier for Namma Metro.
The newly ordered trainsets will operate on the Yellow Line corridor and are designed for seamless integration with Siemens’ signaling system. This enhancement is expected to significantly improve capacity, reliability and operational efficiency as Bengaluru continues to expand its high-demand urban transit network.
State-of-the-art and entirely designed at BEML’s advanced engineering facilities in Bengaluru, the six-car driverless trainsets are built with high-tensile Austenitic stainless steel to offer enhanced strength, durability and safety. Each car comes equipped with two roof-mounted saloon air-conditioners to ensure greater passenger comfort—an essential upgrade as Bengaluru’s metro ridership continues to grow.
This order extends Contract 5RS-DM, originally awarded in August 2023 after a competitive global tender. The base ₹3,177 crore contract covers the design, manufacturing, supply, testing, commissioning and 15 years of comprehensive maintenance of the trainsets. BEML CMD Shantanu Roy welcomed the repeat order, noting that it reaffirms BMRCL’s confidence in the company’s engineering excellence and commitment to delivering world-class, energy-efficient metro solutions.
Earlier in March 2025, BMRCL had placed an order worth ₹405 crore for 42 additional metro cars for Reach 6, increasing that contract’s scope to 69 trainsets (360 cars). Together, these orders highlight BEML’s central role in enabling Bengaluru Metro’s long-term expansion and capacity-building plans.
The upcoming trainsets will feature several modern technologies, including IP-based onboard announcement and information systems, passenger saloon surveillance, LCD dynamic route maps and automatic doors synchronised with platform screen doors—all aimed at improving safety, passenger experience and operational fluidity.
Offering an industry perspective, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “Bengaluru’s rapid metro growth is a testament to India’s rising demand for high-quality urban mobility. With indigenous driverless trainsets and advanced digital systems, BEML is setting a new benchmark for Make-in-India metro manufacturing and strengthening the future of urban transit.”
With over six decades of engineering legacy and state-of-the-art manufacturing units across Bengaluru, KGF, Mysuru and Palakkad, BEML remains a critical contributor to India’s rail and metro ecosystem. The latest order not only expands Bengaluru Metro’s fleet but also reinforces the country’s push toward smarter, more efficient and locally manufactured transit solutions for the next generation.
