Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): In a move aimed at modernising its maintenance ecosystem, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has sought the expertise of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC) to develop an Integrated Data Management System (IDMS) for its expanding network. DMRC has already floated a tender for the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the IDMS on behalf of BMRCL. The last date for tender submission is November 28, with bids set to be opened on December 1.
The collaboration marks a significant step for Namma Metro, which today operates a 96 km network compared to Delhi Metro’s 353 km grid—one of the largest in the world. While Bengaluru Metro began operations in 2011, Delhi’s network has been growing since 2002, supported by sophisticated data-driven maintenance and operational systems.
A senior BMRCL official told Moneycontrol that DMRC has built its IDMS based on decades of operational experience. The platform is designed to streamline and digitalise key maintenance processes across metro systems, covering preventive and corrective maintenance, operational workflows, and asset lifecycle management.
The official explained that DMRC’s domain expertise and software capability made it an ideal partner for BMRCL. “DMRC possesses extensive domain knowledge in operation and maintenance activities, with over 20 years in the Metro field. It has strong software development expertise and is considered a pioneer in this domain. Its ability to deliver customised software tailored to BMRCL’s requirements was acknowledged, and it was decided to leverage this expertise,” he said.
Following detailed discussions, DMRC agreed to customise its software to suit Bengaluru’s specific operational needs. The Delhi Metro will take full responsibility for software development and system integration, while hardware such as servers and network switches will be procured separately from the open market. The current tender floated by DMRC covers this integrated framework.
Welcoming the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said this partnership demonstrates the growing maturity of India’s metro ecosystem. “Collaboration between metro operators is essential for accelerating digital transformation. By adopting DMRC’s proven IDMS, Bengaluru Metro is taking a crucial step towards improving efficiency, reliability, and real-time decision-making in its operations.”
She added that the move aligns with global best practices, where asset-intensive transport systems increasingly rely on interoperable digital platforms to optimise performance and reduce lifecycle costs.
With Phase 2 and 2A/2B expansions underway, Bengaluru Metro is rapidly growing its footprint. The introduction of an integrated data management platform is expected to enhance operational readiness, strengthen maintenance planning, and support long-term asset management—key elements needed for a high-capacity urban transit system serving millions in the years to come.
