CMRL submitted DPR of metro rail projects for Madurai and Coimbatore

Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In an exciting development, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) took a significant step forward in expanding their metro rail network by submitting detailed project reports (DPRs) for the Madurai and Coimbatore metro projects on 14th July 2023. The team, led by the managing director M A Siddique and Madurai metro project director T Archunan, presented these reports to Ramesh Chand Meena, the additional chief secretary of special initiatives in the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The Madurai metro project aims to span a total length of 32 kilometers between Thirumangalam and Othakadai, accommodating an impressive 27 metro stations along the way. Building upon the success of the Chennai metro system, the Tamil Nadu government has ambitious plans to extend this efficient mode of transportation to four cities, including Madurai and Coimbatore. 

The Madurai Project Report spans an extensive 936 pages, while the Coimbatore Project Report encompasses 655 pages. These comprehensive documents provide in-depth information on various aspects, such as train specifications, projected costs, implementation strategies, and station locations, among other crucial details.

The Madurai metro project proposes the implementation of the Thirumangalam - Othakkadei rail track, stretching 31.93 kilometers. This ambitious plan includes the construction of 23 metro stations across a 27-kilometer elevated route and an additional 4.65-kilometer underground tunnel housing three metro stations. Meanwhile, the Coimbatore project envisions a 39-kilometer metro rail upgrading line, running from Avinasi Road to Karumathambatti in Durat and from Ukkadam to Valiampalayam section on Sathyamangalam Road, encompassing a total of 32 metro stations.

Commenting on these exciting developments, CMRL officials expressed their enthusiasm, stating, "Following the success of Chennai's metro system, we have submitted a detailed project report to the Tamil Nadu government for the implementation of metro rail projects in Madurai worth Rs 11,360 crore and in Coimbatore worth Rs 10,740 crore. The Tamil Nadu government will meticulously review these reports and subsequently invite us for detailed discussions regarding the project's implementation. Upon approval from the state government, the project reports will be forwarded to the central government for final authorization."

Once the necessary funding is secured through collaboration between the central and state governments, the authorities will issue tenders to commence the metro projects, marking an exciting new chapter in the expansion of efficient and sustainable transportation in these vibrant Tamil Nadu cities.
