New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has expanded its consultancy footprint beyond urban transport and into the maritime logistics sector by signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Umeandus Technology Pvt. Ltd., and BEML Limited for the development of a Real-Time Automated Cargo Evacuation System (e-FTS) at Kandla Port, Gujarat.
This strategic partnership marks DMRC’s first-ever entry into the port and logistics sector, reflecting its growing role as a multi-modal infrastructure consultant for national and international projects.
The e-FTS (Electronic Freight Transport System) is a next-generation, automated freight transport and cargo evacuation system designed to revolutionize port logistics.
Built on cutting-edge technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT), the system will ensure real-time cargo tracking, improved operational transparency, and faster freight movement — significantly reducing turnaround time and logistics costs.
During the pilot phase, the project will serve as a proof-of-concept for large-scale implementation at other Indian ports and industrial corridors.
According to the MoU, DMRC will:
Develop and oversee the pilot implementation of the e-FTS system at Deendayal Port, one of India’s busiest cargo hubs.
Take charge of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of the project for 25 years once it becomes operational.
Collaborate with partners to prepare a detailed Definitive Agreement, outlining the technical, operational, and financial responsibilities of each party.
The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) will act as the project owner, while Umeandus Technology and BEML Limited will contribute their technological and engineering expertise respectively.
Over the past few years, DMRC has evolved into a multidisciplinary engineering and consultancy powerhouse, offering expertise in urban transport systems, airport metro integration, and now port automation.
The foray into the port logistics sector aligns with India’s national vision of modernizing port infrastructure and enhancing maritime efficiency under the PM Gati Shakti Mission.
With this project, DMRC is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable, technology-driven transport infrastructure, spanning both passenger and freight mobility.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, Managing Director & CEO of Urban Infra Group, lauded DMRC’s diversification milestone:
“This collaboration demonstrates India’s growing capability to merge advanced digital technologies with traditional infrastructure. DMRC’s entry into the port logistics domain is a bold and visionary step that could redefine efficiency standards for cargo handling across Indian ports. The e-FTS project reflects the true spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat — combining innovation, technology, and operational excellence.”
Once operational, the Real-Time Automated Cargo Evacuation System will drastically improve cargo throughput at Kandla Port, reducing dwell time and enhancing overall logistics performance.
Officials also confirmed that the same system architecture could be replicated at other ports or industrial hubs, depending on site-specific requirements and client needs — paving the way for a smarter, more connected freight transport network across India.
