Beijing, China (Metro Rail Today): China is on track to redefine the future of global high-speed rail with the CR450 bullet train, a revolutionary marvel that recently clocked a record-breaking 450 kmph during pre-service trials on the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu high-speed railway. The train, which is undergoing extensive performance and safety testing, is set to enter commercial service in 2026, making it the fastest passenger train in the world.
Unveiled in November 2024, the CR450 prototype was initially designed to reach 400 kmph. Over the past year, engineers have pushed the limits of rail technology, fine-tuning the train’s aerodynamic design, propulsion system, and lightweight structure to achieve unprecedented speeds and efficiency.
The CR450 represents a technological leap forward for China’s rail industry, marking a new generation of ultra-high-speed trains that combine speed, sustainability, and passenger comfort.
Major design features include:
Advanced Aerodynamics: Fully enclosed bogies and extended skirt panels reduce air resistance by 22%, improving energy efficiency and stability.
Extended Nose Cone: A sleek, 15-metre-long nose improves aerodynamic penetration, extending 2.5 metres beyond previous models.
Lightweight Structure: The CR450 is 20 cm shorter and 55 tonnes lighter than the current CR400 Fuxing model, enhancing acceleration and energy savings.
Rapid Acceleration: The train can go from 0 to 350 kmph in just 4 minutes and 40 seconds, nearly a minute faster than existing bullet trains.
Enhanced Passenger Comfort: Reduced drag and vibration ensure a smoother, quieter, and more stable travel experience.
Developed over five years by China Railway and a consortium of domestic research institutions, the CR450 marks a paradigm shift in China’s innovation ecosystem — from manufacturing excellence to original technological creation.
Engineers have meticulously fine-tuned every component, with performance optimisations tracked down to increments of just 0.1%. This relentless pursuit of perfection reflects China’s ambition to consolidate its dominance in high-speed rail technology.
Upon its commercial launch in 2026, the CR450 will not only surpass the Japanese Shinkansen and French TGV but also reinforce China’s position as the undisputed global leader in high-speed rail infrastructure.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, Managing Director & CEO of Urban Infra Group and Managing Editor of Metro Rail Today, lauded China’s engineering accomplishment:
“The CR450 is not just a train — it’s a statement of engineering ambition and national vision. China’s commitment to innovation in rail technology continues to inspire the global transport sector. The leap from the CR400 to the CR450 demonstrates how investment in research and precision engineering can revolutionize mobility for generations to come.”
With the CR450 project, China is reaffirming its global leadership in sustainable, high-speed transportation. As the world’s first train to sustain operational speeds of 450 kmph, it will drastically cut intercity travel times — for example, reducing the Shanghai–Chengdu journey from over 10 hours to less than 6.
Beyond speed, the train’s energy-efficient design and reduced carbon footprint align perfectly with the nation’s “Beautiful China 2035” sustainability goals, furthering the country’s commitment to green and intelligent mobility.
As the CR450 bullet train prepares for its 2026 debut, it stands as a symbol of China’s transformation from industrial power to global innovation leader. The record-setting train not only elevates the standard of high-speed rail worldwide but also redefines what’s possible in the realm of sustainable transportation.
