Siemens wins ₹91.65 crore Telecom Contract for Kochi Metro Phase 2 Pink Line

Kochi, India (Metro Rail Today): Siemens Ltd. has secured a major contract from Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) for the telecommunication systems package of Kochi Metro Phase-II, further strengthening its presence in India’s urban rail technology sector. The contract is valued at approximately ₹91.65 crore and covers the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of advanced telecom systems for the upcoming Pink Line corridor.

According to tender details, Siemens Ltd. emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) with a quoted value of ₹91.65 crore, ahead of L&T Technology Services Ltd., which submitted a bid of ₹101.82 crore.

The project marks another important milestone in the implementation of Kochi Metro’s Phase-II expansion, which aims to enhance urban connectivity between key residential, commercial, and IT zones in Kochi.

Telecom Systems for Kochi Metro’s 11.2-km Pink Line

The awarded package pertains to the 11.2-km elevated Pink Line corridor connecting JLN Stadium to Infopark in Kakkanad through 11 stations. The line is being developed as part of Kochi Metro Phase-II and is expected to significantly improve public transport access to Kerala’s rapidly growing IT and business districts.

The telecommunication systems package will form a critical component of the corridor’s operational infrastructure, enabling seamless communication, passenger information management, operational control, and overall system reliability.

The scope of Siemens’ work includes the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the complete telecom infrastructure required for metro operations.

Industry experts note that advanced telecom systems are essential for ensuring efficient train operations, real-time passenger communication, security monitoring, and integrated control systems in modern metro networks.

Kochi Metro Phase-II Gains Momentum

Construction work on the Kochi Metro Phase-II project began in July 2024, with authorities targeting phased completion of the corridor. The first five stations are expected to be completed by June 30, 2026, while the full corridor is targeted for commissioning by late 2026.

The Pink Line is expected to serve several important economic and institutional hubs, including Infopark, SmartCity, KINFRA, Rajagiri Valley, and the Cochin Special Economic Zone. Once operational, the corridor is likely to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel efficiency for thousands of daily commuters travelling to Kochi’s expanding IT ecosystem.

Apart from metro connectivity, the corridor is also planned with multimodal integration features, linking metro services with buses, water metro systems, and other public transport modes.

Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “Advanced telecommunication systems are the backbone of modern metro operations, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient passenger services. Siemens’ contract for Kochi Metro Phase-II reflects the increasing technological sophistication of India’s urban transit projects and the growing focus on integrated mobility infrastructure.”

Strengthening Siemens’ Urban Rail Portfolio

The latest order further expands Siemens’ footprint in India’s metro rail sector, where the company has been actively involved in signalling, electrification, rolling stock technologies, and telecom systems across multiple urban transit projects.

The Kochi Metro telecom contract also comes at a time when metro rail projects across India are increasingly adopting digitally integrated systems to support automation, passenger information services, operational safety, and network efficiency.

Meanwhile, other packages for Kochi Metro Phase-II are also progressing, with Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. recently emerging as the lowest bidder for the corridor’s electrification works.

As Kochi Metro continues expanding its network, Phase-II is expected to play a key role in supporting sustainable urban mobility and improving connectivity to one of Kerala’s fastest-growing economic corridors.
