Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant boost to Bengaluru’s urban transport infrastructure, the much-awaited Yellow Line of Namma Metro has received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), paving the way for its commercial launch. This 19-kilometre corridor will connect RV Road to Bommasandra, passing through some of the most prominent tech and residential hubs in the city, including Electronics City, which is home to major IT campuses.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is now preparing for the official inauguration of the line, with reports indicating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to flag off the new metro service in the coming weeks. This development is poised to be a major milestone in the city’s journey toward a smarter, more connected, and eco-friendly public transportation network.
The Yellow Line, part of Phase 2 of Namma Metro, includes 16 stations and stretches through densely populated and high-traffic zones. Once operational, the line is expected to reduce travel time, ease road congestion, and facilitate smoother commutes for thousands of daily travelers between central Bengaluru and the booming southern tech belt.
BMRCL officials confirmed that the CMRS conducted a detailed inspection over four days before granting the safety clearance. The final go-ahead was issued after successfully testing various parameters, including track alignment, signalling systems, station readiness, train operations, and emergency response mechanisms.
With an estimated cost of over ₹5,000 crore, the Yellow Line has seen delays due to multiple factors including the non-availability of rolling stock, civil construction hurdles, and coordination with other infrastructure works. However, in recent months, BMRCL ramped up efforts, fast-tracked civil work, and initiated trial runs to meet the August 2025 operational target.
Notably, the line will offer interchange facilities at RV Road with the existing Green Line, and future integration with Silk Board station, which is being developed as a major interchange hub under the Silk Board–KR Puram Blue Line (ORR Line). This will vastly improve east-west and north-south connectivity across the Bengaluru metropolitan area.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said: “The operationalization of Namma Metro’s Yellow Line marks a transformational step for Bengaluru’s urban future. Connecting RV Road to Electronics City will not only decongest some of the city’s busiest routes but also set a precedent for how targeted infrastructure can improve quality of life and economic productivity in fast-growing urban hubs.”
The new line will be powered by solar and conventional grid energy, as part of BMRCL’s sustainable transport initiative. It will use standard gauge tracks and modern rolling stock, capable of operating at speeds of up to 80 kmph. With smart ticketing, platform screen doors, and disabled-friendly infrastructure, the Yellow Line will offer a world-class commuter experience.
As Bengaluru gears up for the line’s grand inauguration, all eyes are on the central and state governments to continue supporting the metro network's expansion, which is widely seen as the most effective solution to the city’s chronic traffic woes.
