Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): Preparations for the much-awaited extension of passenger services from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central under Corridor-1 of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project (IIT to Naubasta) are progressing at a fast pace. As part of the final safety checks, Commissioner Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) Janak Kumar Garg conducted a thorough inspection of this metro section on March 20-21.
The two-day inspection began on March 20, with CMRS Garg examining the tunnels and tracks along both the up-line and down-line between Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central. On the second day, he conducted rigorous high- and low-speed tests on the metro train to ensure safety and operational efficiency across various speeds. Senior officials from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) were also present during the inspection to monitor progress.
Tunnel and Track Inspection
On the first day of the inspection, CMRS Garg began his review at Moti Jheel Metro Station. He then boarded a motor trolley to assess the metro viaduct and the ramp leading to Chunniganj station on the up-line. The inspection proceeded into the underground tunnel, where Garg closely examined the tunnel and tracks while traveling towards Kanpur Central Station.
He also assessed critical safety features, such as the cross passages within the tunnel, which are designed for emergency access. The ventilation system of the tunnel, essential for safety during fire incidents, was carefully reviewed as part of the overall safety evaluation.
Speed Testing and Safety Evaluation
On the second day, March 21, CMRS Garg conducted speed tests on the metro train along both the up-line and down-line, running from Moti Jheel Station to Kanpur Central. Various operational scenarios were simulated, including maximum speed runs, sudden braking tests, and lower-speed operations to evaluate the system's response under different conditions.
Additionally, CMRS Garg visited each metro station along the route to inspect key facilities and passenger safety measures. He evaluated the amenities provided for passengers to ensure a comfortable travel experience. The station control rooms were scrutinized for operational effectiveness, while security systems, such as surveillance and alarm systems, were reviewed to ensure their ability to maintain passenger safety.
The inspection also focused on emergency response systems, including fire safety protocols, to ensure that the metro system is fully prepared for unforeseen incidents.
Awaiting Final Approval
Shri Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of UPMRC, stated, "The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has conducted a thorough inspection of the metro section from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central. He carefully examined all aspects related to passenger services, both in the trains and at the stations. Once the official No Objection Certificate (NOC) from CMRS is obtained, Kanpur residents will soon be able to enjoy seamless metro connectivity between Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central."
With the expected completion of this extension, the Kanpur Metro will significantly enhance urban mobility, connecting key educational institutions, hospitals, markets, and Kanpur Central station. This expansion will serve as a vital lifeline for the city's residents, easing daily commutes for thousands and enhancing the overall quality of life in Kanpur.
