Lisbon, Portugal (Metro Rail Today): Lisbon Metro has reached a critical juncture in its fleet modernization efforts, as it evaluates proposals from leading manufacturers to supply 24 three-car metro trains, with an option for an additional 12 sets. Among the contenders, CRRC Tangshan has emerged as the low bidder, presenting an offer of €115.07 million, significantly below the base price for the contract set at €138 million. The competing bid from Stadler Rail Valencia, amounting to €134 million, underscores the competitive landscape of the procurement process.
The tender, launched in November, has garnered substantial interest from industry players, reflecting the strategic importance of the Lisbon Metro network and its role in facilitating urban mobility in the Portuguese capital. With an execution period of 54 months, the contract aims to deliver a modern fleet capable of meeting the evolving needs of passengers and supporting increased demand, particularly following the completion of key infrastructure projects to extend the Circle and Red lines.
In addition to addressing immediate capacity requirements, the contract option for an additional 12 sets is strategically aligned with Lisbon Metro's long-term fleet management strategy. By enabling the phased replacement of aging trains, the option provides flexibility and ensures the sustainability of the network's operations well into the future.
CRRC Tangshan's competitive bid not only demonstrates its commitment to delivering value-driven solutions but also highlights its growing presence in the Portuguese market. With ongoing deliveries of 18 Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) to Porto Metro, CRRC Tangshan has established itself as a key player in the country's rail transit sector, leveraging its expertise and technological capabilities to meet the evolving needs of urban transportation systems.
However, recent developments surrounding CRRC subsidiaries have raised concerns within the European rail industry. The withdrawal of a bid for a Bulgarian contract by a CRRC supplier, amidst allegations of unfair competition fueled by state subsidies, has prompted an investigation by the European Commission. These developments underscore the complexities of global supply chains and the challenges associated with ensuring fair competition in the rail market.
