CRRC postponed delivery schedule of coaches for Bangalore Metro's Yellow Line

Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): The nearing completion of Namma Metro's Yellow Line construction brings both anticipation and a slight setback for eager commuters. Despite the imminent conclusion of the project, the launch of the service might face an unfortunate delay of up to six months.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) has revealed that the primary cause for this delay lies in the postponed delivery of metro coaches expected from China. The delay is attributed to the necessity for engineers from the coach supply company to accompany two prototype trains. Unfortunately, this process has been hampered as the engineers recently obtained visas for entry into India.

In 2019, the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) secured a ₹1,578-crore contract to deliver 216 metro coaches to the BMRCL. However, fulfillment of the contract became a challenge due to the absence of a manufacturing plant in India, as stipulated in the agreement.

A senior official from BMRCL stated, “Upon receiving the prototype train, the BMRCL will require a minimum of three months to conduct trial runs and obtain approvals for commercial operations. The prototype coaches have already been dispatched from China, and engineers from there are scheduled to arrive in Bengaluru to test the coaches. Their visas were recently approved, and they are expected to arrive here by the end of this month.”

Apart from the coach delivery setback, the launch of Yellow Line operations may also encounter further delays due to the model code of conduct expected to be in force during the general elections in April–May this year. Officials anticipate that operations might commence in July, post the completion of testing on the coaches and the signalling system of the Yellow Line. A seamless interface between the trainset and signalling systems is crucial, followed by oscillation trials conducted through the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

Previously, the BMRCL had issued several notices to CRRC, contemplating the encashment of its ₹372-crore bank guarantee. As of now, the Chinese company has collaborated with Kolkata-based Titagarh Wagons to supply the remaining coaches.

The 19-kilometer elevated Yellow Line, stretching from R.V. Road to Bommasandra, is poised to connect Electronics City and cater to the commuting needs of lakhs of residents. Connecting south Bengaluru to the southeastern parts of the city, the Yellow Line is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity for residents and workers in the Bommasandra industrial area, HSR Layout, Electronics City, and Beratena Agrahara (Hosa Road).

While the Yellow Line's delayed launch brings temporary disappointment, it remains a vital addition to Bengaluru's metro network, promising enhanced connectivity and convenience. As the city eagerly awaits the fruition of this project, the extended timeline allows for meticulous testing and approval processes, ensuring a seamless and efficient commuting experience for all. The collaboration between international and local entities underscores the complexities of large-scale infrastructure projects and the dedication to overcoming challenges for the benefit of the community.
