Delhi Metro celebrates 21 years of Transformative Operations in Delhi-NCR

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a momentous celebration, the Delhi Metro commemorates 21 years of service today, reflecting on its evolution from a modest 8.4-kilometer stretch in 2002 to a sprawling network encompassing 393 kilometers and 288 stations. This anniversary holds special significance as it marks the inauguration of the first stretch by former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, from Shahdara to Tis Hazari on the Red Line.

An Expanding Marvel: From Inception to Present

Since its inception, the Delhi Metro has solidified its status as the lifeline of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), facilitating over six million daily passenger journeys. In the last 21 years, the metro network has witnessed unprecedented expansion, with an additional 380 kilometers of lines laid in the NCR. Presently, ongoing projects are set to extend the network beyond 400 kilometers, solidifying its standing as one of the fastest-expanding metro networks globally.

"From an inaugural network length of just 8.4 kilometres with six stations in 2002, the Delhi Metro stands tall today with a network of 393 km and 288 stations. More than six million passenger journeys are being performed every single day on the Delhi Metro making it one of the largest mass transit systems in the entire world," said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Milestones in 2023

1. Speed Milestone on Airport Express Line

A historic achievement for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was the substantial speed enhancement on the Airport Express Line, reaching an impressive 120 kilometers per hour (KMPH) from September 17, 2023. This acceleration, meticulously executed through collaboration with various agencies and experts, has transformed the travel experience.

2. Inauguration of Dwarka Sector 21 – Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25 Extension

Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi marked this milestone by inaugurating the Dwarka Sector 21 – Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25 extension of the Airport Express Line. The extension connects the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, further enhancing metro accessibility.

3. Digital Transformation of Ticketing Process

Aligned with the vision of making the commuting experience a customer's delight, DMRC introduced a strategic initiative to digitally transform the ticketing process. This initiative includes the integration of National Common Mobility Cards, a QR code-based ticketing system, WhatsApp-based ticketing, and ticket purchases through platforms like PayTM. The goal is to provide commuters with seamless and convenient ticketing options.

4. 'Momentum 2.0' App Revolutionizes Daily Commuting

Launching on November 1, 2023, 'Momentum 2.0' stands as a revolutionary platform, redefining daily commuting for millions in the NCR. Offering integrated QR ticketing, e-shopping, digital lockers, smart utility payments, and last-mile connectivity options, the app transforms the way commuters engage with metro services.

5. CarbonLite Metro Travel Initiative

In an environmentally conscious move, DMRC introduced "CarbonLite Metro Travel," informing passengers about the average amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions saved during metro journeys compared to road-based vehicles. This information is prominently displayed on both paper and mobile QR tickets, fostering awareness of the positive impact of sustainable public transport.

6. Record-Breaking Passenger Journeys

On September 4, 2023, the Delhi Metro achieved a significant milestone by recording 71.03 lakh passenger journeys, marking the highest-ever ridership. This accomplishment underscores the metro's resurgence as the backbone of public transportation in the NCR post the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Conclusion

As the Delhi Metro celebrates 21 years of transformative operations, the journey reflects not only on its past accomplishments but also on the promise of a future marked by continued innovation and efficiency. The milestones achieved in 2023, from speed enhancements to digital transformations, position the Delhi Metro as a global leader in sustainable and customer-centric urban transportation.
