The inauguration event was attended by distinguished dignitaries from leading academic institutions, including IIT Delhi, IIT BHU, and DTU, as well as industry experts. The Centre is designed to be at the forefront of tunnelling research, offering cutting-edge training programs and developing practical, real-world solutions for the tunnelling industry.
With urbanization rapidly reshaping cities and transportation networks, tunnelling is playing an increasingly crucial role in sustainable infrastructure development. The Centre aims to bridge the gap between research and practical implementation, focusing on tunnel design, construction techniques, safety protocols, and workforce training.
A collaborative initiative between DMRC and IIT BHU Varanasi, the Centre combines DMRC’s industry expertise with IIT BHU’s academic excellence. Together, they aim to drive advancements in tunnel construction, improve safety standards, and enhance workforce skills to meet the growing demands of urban infrastructure projects.
The Centre houses state-of-the-art facilities, including smart classrooms and an augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) lab to offer immersive learning experiences. A standout feature of the Tunnel Training Centre is its 25-meter true-scale tunnel model, an exact replica of an operational tunnel. This realistic setup allows trainees to experience tunnel conditions firsthand, without disrupting metro operations, providing an invaluable resource for hands-on learning.
The unveiling of the Cutter Head during the inauguration ceremony was a highlight, marking a significant milestone in the Centre’s mission to advance tunnel technology training for professionals in the field.
The Centre of Excellence in Tunnelling is poised to be a key player in shaping India’s tunnelling future, ensuring the country remains at the forefront of innovation in underground construction and technology.
