New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed a new 5-kilometer elevated metro corridor that will link the upcoming Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) in Jewar to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi, significantly improving connectivity between the two major airports. The proposal is currently awaiting approval from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with the project expected to enhance travel options for commuters in the region.
According to a report by Indian Express, the DMRC plans to submit the formal proposal to CM Yogi Adityanath, who will review it. The project's implementation hinges on securing necessary funding, as confirmed by Arun Vir Singh, CEO of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
The proposed elevated metro corridor will connect Noida Airport, which is slated to open early next year, with IGI Airport, facilitating smoother transit between the two key hubs. The airport, located in Jewar, is expected to cater to the growing demand for air travel in the Delhi NCR region.
In addition to this ambitious airport link, DMRC is also working on another important project: a short metro corridor between Tughlakabad and Kalindi Kunj. This project, which is part of a larger Rs 950 crore initiative, is set to improve connectivity between Aerocity and Tughlakabad within the next three years. The extension to Kalindi Kunj will provide commuters with interchange facilities connecting multiple metro lines, including the Magenta Line, Blue Line, Aqua Line, and a proposed new line extending from Botanical Garden to Sector 142 in Noida.
In a letter dated December 13, Arun Vir Singh informed DMRC's Chief Project Manager, Shiv Om Dwivedi, about the rapid progress being made on the Aerocity to Tughlakabad corridor. Initially, DMRC had drafted a detailed project report for a direct metro link between NIAL and IGI via the expressway. However, this proposal was later shelved when the Uttar Pradesh government chose to prioritize a rapid rail option instead. The rapid rail corridor, spanning 72 kilometers, will connect Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, and the Noida Airport, providing an alternative and faster travel option.
While the original metro link proposal has been deferred, Singh emphasized that the focus is now on developing the rapid rail option, which aims to improve regional connectivity. The DMRC remains committed to ensuring seamless transit for passengers traveling between Noida's new international airport and IGI Airport, as well as enhancing transportation infrastructure in the growing Delhi NCR region.
With the Noida Airport set to open soon, the proposed metro and rail corridors are expected to play a key role in streamlining connectivity, benefiting commuters and travelers alike
