Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): Exciting developments are underway in Pune as workers from Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. kickstart the launch of the first segment of the double-decker viaduct for the Pune Metro Line 3 project. This segment, spanning 1.6 kilometers, will connect Aundh Road to RBI Chowk on Ganeshkhind Road, marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation infrastructure.
The integrated section of Line-3, known as Megapolis Circle – Civil Court, is being constructed following the demolition of two flyovers at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk and E-Square Carnival intersections during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. With an estimated construction cost of Rs. 570 crore, the project's funding will be shared between the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
Pune Metro Line 3, spanning 23 kilometers with elevated stations, is being developed by PMRDA on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis through a 35-year concession agreement signed with Tata's TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (TRIL UTPL + SPVG). Tata Projects Ltd (TPL) is spearheading the civil construction work, having launched the first of 8232 precast segments in July 2022, cast in Tathawade.
The unique design of the double-decker viaduct will accommodate motor vehicles and the local bus rapid transit (BRT) system on the first level, while 3-coach metro trains supplied by Alstom will operate on the second level, optimizing space and efficiency. Additionally, Pune's upcoming 35.96 km High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) road project, led by PMC, is slated to pass between both levels of the viaduct, further enhancing connectivity and accessibility within the city.
Similar double-decker structures are already in operation or under construction in various cities across India, including Jaipur, Kochi, Chennai, Nagpur, and Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi, underscoring the innovative approach to urban transportation infrastructure.
The Pune Metro Line 3 is a substantial ~23 Km elevated Metro rail project designed to connect the IT hub of Hinjawadi with the central business district of Shivajinagar. This Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative was awarded by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to a consortium comprising Tata Group’s TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (TUTPL) and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH. The project operates on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate & Transfer (DBFOT) basis through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) named Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL). The concession period spans 35 years, encompassing the construction period.
This significant milestone in Pune's metro development signifies a leap forward in modernizing the city's transport network, promising enhanced mobility and convenience for its residents.
