Thane, India (Metro Rail Today): Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha-Metro), also known as MahaMetro, has officially opened the technical bids for the first Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract of the Thane Metro project, drawing interest from five leading firms. The Thane Metro project, officially known as the Thane Integral Ring Metro Project, is set to significantly enhance the city's transportation infrastructure.
The Thane Metro project encompasses a total length of 29 kilometers and includes 22 stations, with 20 elevated and 2 underground. Recently approved by the Central Government’s Cabinet, the project has an estimated cost of ₹12,200 crore and a deadline set for 2029. The project aims to streamline urban transit and alleviate traffic congestion in the Thane region.
Details of the First DDC Contract
The scope of the first DDC contract (Package DDC-01) is focused on providing comprehensive design services for six elevated stations located at the northern end of the line. These stations are Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagraha, Manpada, Dongripada, Vijay Nagari, Waghbil, and Waterfront. MahaMetro had earlier invited bids for this contract in August with an estimated value of ₹3.82 crore and a deadline of 36 months for completion.
Bidders for the Contract
The following firms have submitted their bids for the DDC contract, either individually or as part of a joint venture:
The bids are now undergoing a technical evaluation process, which is expected to take a few months. Following this, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to determine the lowest bidder and the likely choice for the design consultancy role.
The appointed DDC will be responsible for producing and proposing detailed designs for all aspects of the project, including civil, architectural, building services, electrical, and mechanical works. This role is crucial for ensuring that the project adheres to technical standards and design specifications, contributing to the overall success of the Thane Metro project.
Next Steps and Timeline
A decision on the appointment of the DDC is anticipated by the end of the year. Subsequently, MahaMetro plans to publish the first civil tender notice for the station construction works in the third quarter of 2025. Additionally, there may be a tender notice for the construction of the elevated viaduct connecting these stations as early as the fourth quarter of 2024.
The Thane Metro project represents a significant investment in urban infrastructure, promising to improve transit efficiency and connectivity in the region. The selection of a capable design consultant is a key step in advancing the project and achieving its ambitious goals.
