Govt of India approves ₹1,067.35 crore Ahmedabad Metro's GIFT City–Shahpur Metro Extension

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of the Ahmedabad Metro corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur under Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC). The 3.33-km elevated stretch will comprise three stations and is estimated to cost ₹1,067.35 crore. The project is expected to be completed in approximately four years.

According to the official release, the extended corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, with ridership expected to increase to nearly 58,059 passengers by 2041. The extension is aimed at strengthening connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT City region, which has emerged as a key financial and business hub.

Several multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial establishments located along the proposed route are likely to benefit from improved metro access. The extension is expected to ease daily commuting between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, catering to travel demand related to business, employment and education, while also enhancing overall network integration and passenger convenience.

During the construction phase, the project is estimated to generate around 1,000 jobs. An additional 250 employment opportunities are expected during operations and maintenance, along with indirect job creation through allied sectors. The project will be implemented by GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The GIFT City–Shahpur extension is a strategic move that strengthens Ahmedabad’s urban mobility framework while reinforcing GIFT City’s position as a global financial hub. Such targeted corridor expansions are essential for supporting emerging economic clusters and ensuring that metro infrastructure keeps pace with urban growth.”
