Gurugram, India (Metro Rail Today): Haryana Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, has set a firm deadline of May 1, 2025, for the commencement of the highly anticipated Gurugram Metro extension project. During a review meeting held on Tuesday, Saini directed Gurugram Metro Rail Ltd. (GMRL) to initiate work on the 29-kilometre extension within this timeframe, with the goal of completing the project in four years.
The extension aims to enhance connectivity across the city, linking key areas such as Millennium City Centre, the Railway Station, Sector-22, and Cyber City. The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹5,452.72 crore, with ₹869.19 crore to be funded by the central government, and ₹4,556.53 crore to be provided by the Haryana state government.
Coordinated Efforts to Minimize Inconvenience
At the meeting, Saini emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between GMRL and various civic agencies to minimize inconvenience for residents during the construction phase. The Chief Minister underlined that traffic disruptions should be kept to a minimum, and comprehensive plans should be put in place to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. “The project should be brought to the ground at the earliest, and during construction, city residents should not face any inconvenience,” Saini said, adding that the impact on day-to-day life should be carefully managed.
Project Status and Timeline
Officials informed the Chief Minister that geotechnical investigations for the first 13-kilometre segment (Package 1) have been completed. Work on civil, architectural, and electrical components has already begun. The process of finalizing tenders for the construction of the depot and Package-1 will be completed by January 31, while tenders for Package-2 are expected to be invited by February 15.
Chander Shekhar Khare, Managing Director of Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) and GMRL, assured that the project would be fast-tracked. “The direction is to bring the project on fast track and ensure minimum inconvenience to people during construction. We will make all efforts to ensure work is started at the earliest,” Khare stated.
Fast-Tracking Recruitment and Consultancy
In addition to the ongoing construction efforts, GMRL is in the final stages of recruiting 20 senior positions to strengthen the team. The recruitment of a general consultant is also a priority, with both employee hiring and consultant appointments being accelerated as per the Chief Minister's directives.
The Gurugram Metro extension is set to significantly improve the city's transportation infrastructure, alleviating congestion and enhancing connectivity in one of Haryana's most rapidly developing regions. With a focus on efficient project execution and minimal disruption to residents, the Gurugram Metro extension promises to be a transformative addition to the city's urban mobility landscape.
